230 GR RN X-Treme plated 45 ACP
4.8 / 4.9 / 5.0 GR Red Dot
Wolf LP primers
1.255 OAL

Chrono is due in tomorrow so I'll get some FPS reading Wed or Thur with another 10 rounds each.

Shot very nice and very soft. 15 yds free standing, all rounds in the "0" on an IDPA target.
In terms of grouping, best to worse and none were bad, 4.8/5.0/4.9 loads.

One FTF in a Federal case, put it back in the mag and it fired fine.

Couple of notes on the FTF:
- I have the GGI competition spring kit with a 17# hammer spring (stock is 22#), also comes with a 19#.
- Wolf primers seat VERY easily in the Federal cases compared to all others.
I'll monitor for more FTF and check the brass, may need to move back up to a 19# hammer spring if it continues on mixed brass.

Nice work. I've not used Red Dot, is that a mid range load? how did you like it?

Congrats! RedDot is a useful powder for the service calibers & light target loads in larger cases. Always accurate, sometimes dirty @ low pressures. You 5gr loads should be around 800fps.

Fred

What would you consider "low pressures" with my setup?
230 plated RN
Red Dot
Just so I'm aware, that's all. I like a clean gun.

Should be a mid range load, you have to search to find useful plated bullet data.
Nothing to compare it with as of now. Shot good, brass looked good, cycled fine, no issues.
I got the Red Dot when it was the only powder I could find so I'm going to use it. I got some BE and some 231 as well recently. Will work them after I get a good RD load set up.

Your gun will tell you, you'll find unburnt powder or lots of soot on the case mouths. I think you are about right at the low limit @ 4.8gr but you'll know.

I use Red Dot in a lot of pistol rounds, but have not tried it in 45ACP. I have been pleased with it to date, in fact, I ordered 4# of it this morning. Congrats on your first loads, and keep us informed as to your progress.

Went well with the ProChrono today. Changed the loads up a bit to 4.8/5.0/5.2 and here is what I got.
The 5.2 loads had two double holes and one triple hole at 15 yds free standing, by far the most accurate with less FPS than the 5.0 loads. I'll run some more of these three loads with some IDPA type shooting to see which allows me to get back on target faster as well and run some more through the prochrono.

About what would be expected from the manuals. 45s are all low pressure loads relative to 9mms and 40s and 357 sig etc.,

I'm getting a chronograph... this adds too much fun and detail to ignore.

Fascinating that more powder resulted in lower velocity when you went to 5.2 grains. May not be statistically significant, but it certainly didn't raise the velocity. VEEEERRRRYYY interesting.

Thx for posting that.

POwders can reach vel. platues that tell you pressures are where they should be. As in adding more powder only increases pressure & not vel. A chrono helps you see the progression & where the platue is. Usually means time to stop.

Fred, I had never thought of that about velocity but it makes complete sense. As always, thanks for taking the time to provide advice and information. I wonder how many fingers and eyes you have saved over the years? Big Grin

Now if I could just get everyone to stop using TG!Wink Of course if Hogdon would rename their Clays series w/ other names, that might save a gun or two as well.
