Does the Maritime Transportation Security Act include firearms or CCW? Login/Join

I'll be visiting upstate NY and VT later this month, and I may take a Lake Champlain ferry between Plattsburgh and Burlington. I can take a land route and avoid the ferry. For CCW I'm covered under LEOSA.

I found this on the company's site:

http://ferries.com/general-info/ferry-policies/

Does Lake Champlain Ferries have any security procedures?

Yes. Since July 1, 2004, Lake Champlain Ferries has operated under the guidelines of the Maritime Transportation Security Act. Under these guidelines, all Lake Champlain ferry passengers and their vehicles may be subject to screening. Passengers who do not agree to a screening will not be permitted to board any vessel.

I did a little simple research on the act and could not find anything about CCW, firearms, or locking a handgun in the trunk. My sources:

https://www.congress.gov/107/p.../PLAW-107publ295.pdf

http://www.worldshipping.org/p...security_summary.pdf

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...Security_Act_of_2002

Oh ye brilliant minds of SF, is it legal to bring a handgun on one of these ferries?

May not be the answer you're looking for but I've been going to VT every summer my entire life and often we do the Grand Isle ferry to go to NY for various trips. Never been any security or searches.

I will say when I lived in Michigan I took the ferry back from Wisconsin and on their webpage they just said to alert the attendant when you pull up that you have a firearm in the vehicle. I did and he made some note and then we chatted about guns for a minute and that was it.

Thanks for the tips. I plan to take the northern surface route one way, but I'll lock it in the trunk and tell the guy. Worst thing is I take the roads both times.

Isn't it amazing how much effort law abiding citizens make to follow the laws...
