Assuming both are the same caliber, what would you do for CCW & why?: Go with a slim single stack pistol (P239) & also carry 1 spare mag on you, or go with a double stack (P229) & carry no spare mag?

Although this is a bit of a stupid question, double stack w/o spare mag.

I carry a single stack with a spare mag though, because it is easier to conceal a smaller, thinner pistol plus an additional mag somewhere else on your body. If I could hide it easier, I'd carry a double stack with 2 additional mag Smile

If you think gun magazines are objective or honest, when's the last time they wrote a truly negative review of a firearm? Do you really think all of those pre-production models they're shooting run as reliably and shoot as accurately as they say they do?

90% of gun malfunctions can be attributed to poor ammo (reloads, Russian, etc.), lack of maintenance, weak springs, cheap magazines, or improper technique. When a well-trained shooter using a wide variety of high quality ammunition fed from a reliable, self-leveling magazine shoots your gun after it's gone through a through inspection, spring replacement, and cleaning, and still has problems, then it's the gun. Until then, the problem is YOU.

Many recommend carrying a spare mag regardless of whether its for a single or double-stack firearm - the theory being that a spare replaces a possible damaged or dirty mag when you're in a tight situation.

true. I'm used to carrying a spare on me, mostly as a reload if needed as my mindset was borne out of carrying mostly 1911s. Now that I'm carrying other guns w/higher capacities, I was just trying to get a concensus on what most others are doing.

There are several of these threads going at the moment. Not a bad idea to look around a bit before posting, just to see if someone else has already asked your question--there might be answers already waiting. I'm just pasting this into each of them.

Anyway, you should carry whatever reliable gun you shoot best with, and then find a way to carry at least one reload (whether it's a spare mag, speedloader/strip, powder horn and a ball or two, whatever).

I have no problem concealing a full size double-stack handgun with two spare mags, so I do that. However, if I had to choose ONLY between the two options in the original post, I would go with the single-stack and one spare mag. Even if that added up to less than the capacity of one double-stack mag, I'd rather protect against the possible failure of the first magazine.

The spare mag isn't only a Rambo backup. it's also in the even of a malfunction.

I allways carry a spare mag regardless of the capacity. In my 30+ years of being around guns I have only seen one malfuction that could not be traced back to the ammunition or the magazine. In either case a fresh magazine should remedy the situation.

Agreed. Cool

I'll carry two single stack mags, and usually two double stack mags, though sometimes I may just go with only one double stack. The point being, it's for 'just in case'.

I carry two spare mags with every gun I carry as I have seen just about every makers mag take a crap at the worst time in the action league I shoot. I carry mine in single mag holders as its more modular.

Spare magazines no matter what the capacity, and spare speedloaders/strips for the revolvers, cause ya just never know when you'll need them.

I would carry the weapon I shot the best. I always carry a spare magazine in case of malfunctions, not for extra ammo.

I agree w/ the other posters. Extra mags are more for malfunction than reloads. I carry in a shoulder rig a lot and two SCT mags (17rds each) nearly perfectly balance my P229 w/ a factory 13 rounder in it.
Lets face it, if I need nearly 50 rounds with what I might run into on the streets, I am already woefully outgunned and probably overmatched.

A spare mag should be considered normal for any auto loader you're carrying. I must admit to breaking this rule a lot lately, and should go back to carrying a spare, it is a hassle, but so is getting killed.

I'm sorry, I AM new to posting here, so maybe I missed something in the guidelines. Do you have to wait a while before you point something out in a straightforward manner?

By the way, did you notice that the original poster registered 3 full calendar days before I did? Given that level of seniority, I don't know what I was thinking...

No timeline for it. Just reading that post, it came across a little harsh. I'm sure it probably wasn't meant that way, but it looked sorta like that.

Plus it's sort of good form to provide a link when stating other (recent) threads on a topic exist.

With regard to the original post, I carry a single stack pistol and a pair of extra magazines, or will once my friend gets me a double mag holder and holster for my 1911.

In the mean time I just pocket carry a J frame.

Other I would choose whatever I shot better and carry two spare mags. I have never been able to grasp why anyone would bother to carry a gun without at least one spare mag. Mags can break does it happen often, no but murphy's law can always bite. But thats enough of a tangent my personal choice for carry most of the time is a Sig 229R .357sig, with two spare mags.
