There has been serious talk in the state legislature (more than what the article state, it's just not that publicized) to let teachers carry concealed in the classroom. Now, one school district has decided to let their teachers carry.

i think the principal should have a mini 14 or m-16 in pieces in a closet too. locked of course.
it's out of sight, delay's immediate threat if someone got a hold of it or tried to use it and if something happened. it would be there way before the cops do. what happens when you dial 911 and get a busy signal? and if a disaster occurred would you believe the police would honor a militia consisting of your and your neighbors designed for maintaining the peace? |

I'm for it as I'm for allowing anyone with a license to carry in a school.

+1. I'm not a big fan of "entitling" certain segments of the carrying population over the remainder of us but I certainly wouldn't stand in the way of enabling teachers, as a start, to carry in schools. They had a talking heads segment on the Today show this week (I think) where the principal of that school and the head of the Houston teachers' association squared off.
It was pretty funny. The Houston person said it was a loophole that allowed them to do that and she was working w/ the legislatures to close it. She also said teachers wouldn't have the heart to shoot a student (yeah right...if the kid is evil, I'm sure they'd put him down). I wish the principal emphasized how long it'd take to get help if a situation arose...he just mentioned police were 30 miles away and the driveway of the school was a few miles long. Or that they should just give it a try and review it in two years. Or invite the Houston person down to do a "simulation" w/ her as the gun toting student ;-) |

I have no problem with this what so ever. As long as the teachers have the knowledge and profiency with their chosen side arm, more power to them.

Here's an e-mail I sent to the district superintendent:
Dear Superintendent Thweatt, I read a recent article on-line regarding your decision to allow school staff to carry concealed firearms with the provision that they receive a concealed handgun license as well as more specific training to insure as much as possible that they are prepared for any crisis that threatens students in your district. I’ve spoken with several law enforcement officials within our locale regarding the matter of responding to school shootings and, as much as we hope to rely on law enforcement, they agree that the best they can hope to achieve is to minimize the number of killings rather than prevent or intervene as it initially happens. I don’t think you’ll be very popular among the gun control advocates in our country, but I do think you’ve made the right choice in staffing the building with employees that are prepared to teach, as well as protect, our youth. I agree with your statement of: "The naysayers think (a shooting) won't happen here. If something were to happen here, I'd much rather be calling a parent to tell them that their child is OK because we were able to protect them”. I think that all the staff should be prepared in planning for such a crisis, along with arming certain staff that meet the requisite training and handgun certification. Most importantly, I think that those who will be carrying concealed should, in the event of such a crisis, wear something that readily identifies them as a staff person who is allowed to carry concealed once things unfold to allow law enforcement officials to readily identify them as one of the ‘good guys’ and then let law enforcement take over when they’re able. I applaud your courage in making such a tough decision and hope you have the support of your staff and community. This may be the first ‘test’ within our country in proving that armed staff can prevent and intervene to stop or keep the killing of our children to a minimum. I pray that your school district, and any other districts in our country, will never encounter such a crisis in the future. But for anyone to believe that it won’t, and base their planning on such a belief, will leave innocent people exposed to grave risk, with a wake of parental and community grief and anguish. Sincerely, Anthony DiSabatino (I have worked in education in the state of Ohio for 29 years now) |

Im for it, but u better be a damn good shot !!! I can see it now... teacher would have to split all kids apart from the asalant, wait. and then return fire...while that other child/adult does not care and fires away...Females/male teachers better have damn good training and better be at the range along with the books... maybe trace lasers would be a must on those guns...?
