I was interested in seeing how long the actual process takes for some of our members before becoming legal to conceal.

This includes the time to fill out paperwork, submissions, take classes, get approvals, Etc.

In cases where the process took less time or more time than should have been typical, list the actual time it took for you.

If you want to brag or vent about the process, please post your state.

Question:
What was the average length of time to get your concealed handgun permit?

Choices:
Permit? We don't need no stinkin permit!
1/2 day or less
Same day.
1-3 days.
3-7 days.
7-15 days

What you'll find, I think, is that there is no "average" since nearly every county in every state allowing CCW has a different process.

I guessing at the 60-90 days, but it sounds about right from the class we took in February till I received my permit from the sheriff. Probably closer to the 90 days since the sheriff took 45 days to process the application.

No complaints though, our sheriff is a good one here in SW MO.

Took my CCW class on July 25th - filed the paperwork with the county on July 28th. Got my permit in the mail on September 28th, so overall about 60 days. I live in Michigan.

Bought my conceal carry gun last Wednesday - it definitely speeds up the process when it comes to purchasing

Indiana is a "shall issue" state , takes about 60 days. That was my last time waiting, I paid the $120 or so and got the lifetime pers. protect. permit.
The permit is called "License to Carry Handgun" , no distinction as to concealed or open carry , open carry isn't common, but legal.
Don't leave home without it.

Volume of applicants has a great deal to do with it. And in these economic times, many agencies are dealing with reduced staffing...

I got mine at the beginning of the year and it took just over 60 some days.

vtrnboi, I did notice the different design, but I really don't care what it looks like, so long as I got it back in a reasonable amount of time.

In Virginia it varies from county to county. Here in Page co. it took me just a little over 2 weeks with the class and all. My latest renewal was ready in only 4 days. I have friends that there original took over 3 months and there renewals taking almost as long.

Less than 20 hours, only because the chief had worked an early shift that day and I got to the station after he left. Next day one of the officers dropped it off at the house before lunchtime. If that's not service I don't know what is! Big Grin

It took about a month to get my first Ohio CCW and about 3 weeks to get the renewal.

I received my Pennsylvania non-resident permit exactly 7 days from the day I ordered it.

It was a long time ago, probably close to eight years, because we have to re-up every two years, and my third renewal is due next summer, but about 45 days here in Mendocino County, Kalifornia.

In my experience over the past year or so...

VA Resident - @30 day
PA Non-res - 10 days
FL Non-res - 42 days
ME Non-res - 60 days
UT Non-res - @3 months
NH Non-res - @4 months

NH basically forgot about non-residents for 2 months, so when I called after 4 months, there was a message saying they were just being processed.

All my stuff was submitted using Military ID or DD-214 for firearms training except UT (UT class required), as well as already having a VA permit...

It varies from county to county in Minnesota. Some counties have sheriff's who are hostile but most do their job as required by law. If the permit is not denied in 30 days it is considered issued. Personally, I wouldn't want to get caught carrying without the physical permit. If the Sheriff denies your permit, you can appeal and if you win, the Sheriff (ends up being the Taxpayers) pays your court costs. In this state, the permit is called a "Permit to Carry a Pistol". There is no distinction between open and concealed carry.

I took my classes on a Saturday, handed in my application on Monday and had my permit (by mail) on Thursday. My county has a progressive people oriented Sheriff. We are lucky.

Took the class on a Saturday. Got a appointment with the sheriff on the 16th of the following month. Recieved the pick up call about 20 days later. Overall about 6-7 weeks in NC.
