I watched it cold last night. Wife recorded it and she doesn't even like SF. Anyway, I had never heard of it, just recognized Seth McFarland in the first scene.
I liked it OK, found it mildly amusing. As a military officer, the lax dealings between the CPT and the crew was pretty funny to me; "The last captain let us drink soda on the bridge, can we still drink soda"
Pilots are always a bit awkward as the cast hasn't hit their stride yet working together. If the wife wants to keep watching it I'll give it a shot.

While watching they showed a dog going down on himself. I was on the phone with my sister talking about the hurricane and I started laughing. Then I had to explain to her that they got some dog on in the background going to town. A minute later the two guys talk to each other about it and I decided right then that I would give this stupid shit a try.

Hound DogI was really happy to see Donna Noble's dad from Doctor Who working again

It was a very gentle mashup/spoof of Trek. Played surprisingly straight. Good to see Jack Bristow working again, he's always a pleasure.
My wife and I both gave it a mild thumbs up, we'll give it a chance.

tanksoldierIn fairness it takes a couple seasons for writers to get their feet under them and characters to get fleshed out.
Even comedies like MASH had their moments once things got going.
The problem is, in this environment, shows rarely get that chance.

ChuckFinleyWatched the 2nd episode. I'd love an original show. I find this one to be distractingly derivative, the irreverence to command structure to extend beyond any suspension of belief, and the thought that crew members of that time period will know references to Compton & reality TV to be ludicrous.
I'm glad they are moving to Thursday when I'm far too busy to look this show up.

ST: Next Generation NEVER would have made it past the first half season in this day and age, IMO. The show pretty much sucked for the first 2 seasons. It was well into Season 3 until they found their groove. The last 4 seasons were some of the greatest Sci-fi of all time.
Of course, that's an 'original' show we are talking about. I don't see Orville going the distance. I think they just hoped for some quick bucks off the first half season or so (and if, by some miracle, the show has legs, so much the better).

JeepsRuleI enjoyed it, but was hoping the humor would blend better. Serious for a few minutes, then sit-com for a few minutes, back and forth. But I will give it some more viewings to see if the characters and writers settle into what they are trying to do.
But, as others have said, this ain't no Firefly!!

whanson_wiMy wife *LOVES* scifi shows. Just absolutely adores them. She didn't watch the 1st episode all of the way through, and didn't bother looking for the next episode to autotune it.
That's about the worst vote of no-confidence I could ever give a scifi show.

StarTravelerI watched the first twenty minutes or so of the second episode last night. It seemed practically cringeworthy to me in the rare moments it wasn't just outright boring. When I left the room to go take care of something, it wasn't nearly compelling enough to make me want to hurry back. I missed the remainder, but it didn't feel like I missed much.

I actually saw this review online before the show premiered. I think it actually helped me appreciate it more.
I was expecting a Galaxy Quest style spoof. Having my expectations reset to it just being a take off on Star Trek really helped.
I am/was a big TNG/Voyager/DS9 fan. The reboot movies have been fine (except into Darkness which was unbearably bad) but I have been NOTHING but disappointed over EVERYTHING I hear about the new Star Trek.
I was looking forward to a new ST being on TV when it was first announced so I think this will do a half decent job of filling the void.

DanHI'm really liking this show. As long as you're not expecting pure comedy 1st, sci-fi 2nd, it's pretty good. If you're looking for pure Galaxy Quest, you're not going to like this.

DanHI also really want the soundtrack to this show. The pilot and main theme were composed by Bruce Broughton. He's the guy that scored Silverado and Tombstone. Every episode is also getting a full orchestra each week.

EmpireStateNope. Thats it. No thanks. Saw episode one, missed episode two, guess football went long. Started episode 3 and 2 minutes into it, we have a baby needing a gender change. Fucking social justice warriors liberal idiots can ruin every thing they touch. Wanted to sit down, be entertained and have a laugh and here we go. Goodbye Orville. I may crack a slight smile in a few weeks when its cancelled but I probably wont care enough.
