I haven't seen it. the movie might not be too bad but i guess the timing is wrong. i bet a super man or a bat man movie would boooom and everyone would fall in love and want to buy it and watch it over and over again but this is not what the people want now. We need a super hero movie right about now and this is not it.

Have you ever seen or read anything that ever indicates that DC’s joker character is a hero?

Ever?

Also, if you need a hero movie right now, I suggest you buy the Infinity Saga Blu-ray set that Marvel is teeing up. It’s probably $800, 800hrs, and should satiate even the most dire of super hero thirsts.

For what it’s worth.

My hope is that American film-goers will snap out of this phase of infantilism, but that appears highly unlikely. It's going to get even worse. As long as people are willing to fork over their money to the whores in Hollywood, we'll keep getting more and more of the same garbage.

I stand firmly with Martin Scorsese on these dumbass cartoons.

Martin Scorsese Doesn't Think Marvel Movies Are Cinema

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Bravo, Mr. Scorsese. Thanks for speaking out.

And Marty is not only one of the best directors and film makers we have left today, but also one of the absolute best in the history of cinema. These got damn superho films are glorified cartoons. I’ve seen two of them (Marvel) that were good enough to be called films, those 2 and Nolan’s Batman trilogy. That’s it. And maybe the original Blade film with Snipes. The rest? Hot garbage.

You want to a see a real film, a masterpiece. Then prepare yourself for November when Marty’s the Irishman hits. It’s going to be limited engagement at the theater and then will release on Netflix streaming at the end of the month. The older, non-snowflake aged, critics are calling a masterpiece and one of his best films of his career. Pesci, Keitel, DeNiro, Pacino. And that’s saying something with Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, Goodfellas, the Departed, Cape Fear, Gangs of New York, the Aviator, The Color of Money, The Wolf of Wall Street, and many others under his belt. He may like Mob films but so do I, and this film is based on actual events in history with the mob and the federal government. Not another dickhead in blue tights.

I will say Phoenix is the one best actors we have living today. I want to see these film, especially since the simpleton viewer, and snowflakes, are having such a problem with an indie/arthouse version of one of these characters instead of flying around and shooting laser beams. But I have one remaining pass to use in a theater and then I’m done going to the theater for the rest of my life due to snowflake/millennial/smartphone combination interrupting films. And it will be used to the see the Irishman so I can look back with fondness the last time I stepped into a theater.

Pretty much my overall cinema experience with "comic book" movies, not counting Sin City. Other than the Chris Nolan Dark Knight films (I consider them crime films rather than superhero movies), I saw one complete Marvel movie, the comeback vehicle for Downey Jr, and parts of two others early ones, not knocked out by any these and have no interest in the rest of the Marvel movies.

Scorsese's name in this thread is interesting, because for one, he is named checked quite a bit in reviews for this Joker film, good and bad, apparently his 70s work is a big influence on the gritty, realistic style of the film. And even more interesting because Scorsese was actually going to co-produce this film with Todd Philips a couple of years ago, but pulled out to make The Irishman.

as a fan of some of the comics that were made into movies, I enjoyed some of them (including as mentioned the Batman trilogy, and Ironman)

F4 was decent, maybe the first spiderman,

however, after at least 2 versions of superman, several spiderman movies, and several different spidermen, blah blah blah I got tired trying to keep up with who is who,

and honestly, how super are these superheros if the vast majority of a city gets destroyed in the process?

having said that, I loved Sin City, and The Watchmen,
also can't wait to see HBO's version of Watchmen to see how that pans out,

I know that the Marvel movies are absolute blockbusters in terms of money grossed, but I've found most of them to be little more than explosions and special effects. The last "Marvel" movie I truly enjoyed was Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. I have no desire at this point to see any future MCU movies, as I feel that there really isn't much substance to them.

Nah, they just need more CGI and 'splosions'n'shit. Maybe reduce average shot length to a matter of milliseconds. You know, to keep the audience's ATTENTION.

More product tie-ins. That's the ticket.

great movie, impressive performance.

It is inspired so much from the grime of late 70's New York, it is enjoyable to watch. It's like watching Death Wish or Taxi Driver, Network. It is imbued with all of the problems that New York had in the 70s: bankruptcy, crime, sleeze, overwhelmed public services.

This is like NYC before Giuliani, before Ed Koch. This is a shitty place to be

And the character of Joker. The writer has given him enough complexity that it deftly flips between pathos and revulsion; righteous indignation and narcissism; loathing and concern. Even Arthur Fleck doesn't know what he is feeling or doing, he is generally confused about himself and what he wants. On the one hand he wants to be loved and admired, on the other he wants to lash out and hurt people. He wants to be understood, but he himself cannot understand what he wants. Does he want justice, affirmation, acceptance, vengeance, acknowledgement? He doesn't know, he can't keep it straight

And the laugh. This isn't Jack Nicholson, this isn't Heath Ledger, this is not funny, it's just that it is a pathology.....he can't stop it, he doesn't want it, he doesn't know what's funny, he can't cry, it's this weird half-choking, half cackling, painful to watch insane hyena thing.

The story arc, even though you know it is going to end badly, we don't know how badly or how it happens.

The cinematography is so skilled at making every bit of the city, the characters into a sort of sepia like, gritty background. Everybody is pale earth tones, there is hazy cigarette smoke everywhere, you feel like you are going to come out of the theater stinking like you would after spending all night at some smoky bar. It really makes the atmosphere of the film that much more depressing.

A well balanced breakfast being necessary to the start of a healthy day, the right of the people to keep and eat food shall not be infringed.

I thought I read somewhere that this movie was never intended to be a “joker” movie and simply a look at somebody spiraling down into what ultimately becomes violent insanity. I believe I saw that the studio ultimately figured it would gross more with a “super hero” tie in or some such.

For me there is cinema and there are carnival rides if you will. Both can be equally appealing and enjoyable but they most certainly are two different beasts even if both are films.

^^^ I haven't seen it - will wait for streaming - but that seems to be the consensus. This isn't a superhero movie at all, really. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but it's far from an action flick.

OK, thank you, Ripley and PJW. I've got it now. I understand.

Some day, all this is going to have to come to a head, and it looks all the time like that day is coming sooner than most of us believe.

I got that impression as well, and that's only from seeing the trailer.

Looks like the leftist and corporate media attempts to discourage people from seeing this film have failed miserably.

Saw it tonight.
It's only nominally a comic book movie.
It was more though provoking than traditionally entertaining.

Phoenix really should be a front runner for an Oscar.

I was thoroughly invested in the character.
We all know what the final product will be, but I had no idea how he would get there, and was on the edge of my seat as it developed.

For all the reasons PJW mentions, he probably won't have a chance.
