Hell or High Water
Bridges had a great advisor in retired Ranger Joaquin Jackson, a tremendous asset to the state of Texas and law enforcement in general. He passed earlier this year and is missed...

Wow. We have totally different reads on this.

How many old Westerns were based on big business interests (whether rail, oil, cattle, or as in this case, banks) going after the "little guy"? Pretty much all of them.

Bernie Sanders? Good grief. I guess someone had to say it tho.

The Bernie Sanders big banks are evil vibe killed what could have been a great movie, unfortunately. The shithead director/writer/whoever couldn't help themselves, inserting "evil banks" quotes several times throughout the movie. Since when is it terrible for a bank to try and reclaim funds from a legitimate debt? If you are a drunk, broke ass deadbeat, it's not the banks fault that you are a scumbag loser.

I give it 8/10. Lose the communist/socialist mantra and the film gets a 9.5/10.

Banks big or little will fuck you out of every last penny any chance they can. Stupid people fall for it...smart informed people don't. They love stupid people. Simple as that. Is it illegal no...evil? Maybe.

I thought it was an excellent film all around. The old "rattle snake" waitress cracked me up.

Another Chris Pine, Ben Foster film worth watching: The Finest Hours (2016).

I thought Jeff Bridges did a great job in the movie. Maybe even Oscar quality. Good movie and the scenes of the 'dying' Texas were really thought provoking. A good feel good movie.

I heard about the late Ranger Jackson via Sheriff Jim Wilson's writings - just ordered the book "One Ranger" to boot.

I'll be on the lookout for this movie.

I didn't read through the posts because my wife and I want to see this movie. Our son, who sees quite a lot of movies, saw it and said it was the best movie he's seen this year.

Saw it yesterday and had a few reactions . For openers , I didn't think that Bridges part was developed enough . He was obviously meant to be a hard ass but they din't show much to support that concept . In the Dirty Harry movies for instance , they would always throw in a few preliminary scenes unrelated to the plot showing what a mean SOB Eastwood could be .

It was obvious from the beginning that the deputy was not going to finish out the movie . He was Tonto to Jeff Bridges's Lone Ranger . Tonto always got his ass kicked in some way , shape or form .

When the crazy brother was being followed by all the locals and he gets out walking back toward them , full auto or no full auto , I think one of those good old boys would have cleaned his clock with one round from a .30-30 Winchester .

After Bridges has retired and drives over to confront the surviving brother , he takes with him what looks like a Kahr . In fact it looks like the same Kahr that the punk in the green Challenger was brandishing in the service station . Maybe they were on a tight budget . What happened to that stag handled 1911 he was carrying on duty . That looked like a personal weapon not something that he would have turned in on retirement.

Despite such observations , I did enjoy the movie . Soundtrack was great . Can't get much better than Townes Van Zandt , Billy Joe Shaver and Ray Wylie Hubbard in the same movie .

I noticed in the credits it said the "old man" was Buck Taylor . Was that the guy in the bank who said , "Damned right , I got a gun !" or another old man .

I think the punk had a Ruger P-95.

You may be right . Those kinds of guns all look alike to me .

Just saw it yesterday, loved every second of it. Acting, dialog, scenery, all great. Very well done.

I think the kid had a Ruger P89 or P94 since the slide was stainless.

It was a good movie. Probably not a great one, but a good one. The acting was uniformly good.

They did capture the look and personas of modern Rangers. The white shirts, ties, tooled leather, and fancy guns. Those boys do favor 1911s with fancy handles.

Being set in Texas (although this is West Texas, not the Valley), it is reminiscent of "No County For Old Men." But it isn't the same movie.

I didn't object to the "evil banks" thing. That is, as someone said, a theme in Western movies since forever. They may have laid it on a little heavy, but it wasn't meant as any political statement that I could see. It is a trope in Western films.

Sounds like a date to me.

Watched with the spousal unit. It was enjoyable but not worth a ticket IMO not the stuff you watch twice.

Agreed. A good movie with some excellent acting but not a second watch in the future.

Just caught myself via On Demand over the past couple of days...did wind up watching it twice, I always pick up on some detail I missed the first time around. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is something I'd wondered about. I've recently read Joaquin Jackson's "One Ranger" and knew he'd done some advising for this film. I wasn't sure if the tooled leather belts, etc. were still favored by current Rangers...sounds like they are.

I will also say that I was prompted to snag a few songs from iTunes thanks to this movie, including Waylon's "You Ask Me To."

Saw it when it first hit the theater and really enjoyed it, one of the best endings to a film ever.

Had to pick up the bluray last week to add to my permanent collection. I hope it gets re-released soon so it gets remembered at Oscar time.

Taylor Sheridan did a wonderful job writing this one.
