So I'm watching a rerun of Joss Weadon's Angel, and one of the female characters has a death scene where she gasps out her last words, "Why can't I stay" Not the best ever but much better
than I expected. It got me thinking, what was the best death scene? I had nothing so I put it to you gentlemen. God bless America...and no one else |

John Wayne in "The Shootist"
As he is dying, he watches Ron Howard shoot the bartender then throw the gun down. Wayne smiles and passes on, knowing the kid will not follow in his footsteps. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you don't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them. |

+1 "Time to die" When an American says that he loves his country, he means not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies glistening in the sun, the wide and rising plains, the great mountains, and the sea. He means that he loves an inner air, an inner light in which freedom lives and in which a man can draw the breath of self-respect. ~Adlai Stevenson |

There is a wrenching suicide scene in the movie "Rules Of Attraction" that always gets me.

My favorite 'last words' ever. In the interests of culture, here is the complete quote: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in the rain. Time to die. " Sends chills down my spine, reading it. When Shane dropped the grenade in Lem's car in the episode Post Partum of The Shield.
Shane's monologue after it goes off still sends shivers down my spine. Also, and I'm going a bit old school here, you can't top Caesar's death in Shakespeare's, Julius Caesar. "Et tu Brute?" |

I've always liked Joe Pilato's death in George Romero's 'Day of the Dead' from 1985.
His character gets torn in half by zombies, and as he watches the ghouls drag his legs down the hall and start chowin' down on his entrails, he has time to scream with his last dying breath, "CHOKE ON 'EM! CHOKE ON 'EM!!!" That was so awesome. |

When Steve McQueen as Jake Holman in "The Sand Pebbles" holds off the Chinese in the embassy courtyard with a BAR so that a very young and very hot Candice Bergen can escape. He's running that final stretch to get away, only to get shot just before he makes it. As he sits there holding his bleeding stomach he yells, "What the hell happenend!?" and dies. Steve McQueen was the King of Cool.

I just ordered this in Blu Ray. It is in a three pack. The Sand Pebbles/Longest Day/Patton. Looking forward to seeing them again. Back to the program. Bladerunner just popped in my head, as that scene just really gripped me. Only other one that came to mind was Meaning of Life....having all those women chase me to my death..... ___________________ This is my BOOMSTICK! |

I actually watched that episode yesterday. I never really go into Angel when it was running, but have recently discovered how entertaining it is. Back on track... a few came to mind. Boromir's death in The Fellowship of the Ring. I thought the movie did it justice, but the description in the book just can't be topped. The final scene in Way of the Gun. "Until that day then?" "Until that day." Back to a Joss Whedon creation... When Mal kicks the guy into the air intake on Serenity. Just plain classic. |

Newman and Redford in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." You didn't actually see them die, but you knew it was coming.
