Just got back from this. Kinda of a strange film, same director as Ex-Machina, and 28 Days later.
It's a nice break from the bubble gum Comic book movies. Almost like a darker Arrival (2015).
Thought it was pretty good for a gray Sunday afternoon movie.

Yes, a weird quiet little film. It was a good representation of Alien: Covenant on shrooms. Adding to the surrealness was seeing Poe Dameron being hooked up with Padme - they're not supposed to know each other! (I haven't been that weirded out since I saw Padme and Uncle Owen fight off evil Obi Wan Kenobi in the wild west in Jane Got a Gun!)

If they added some Jesse Ventura fire support to the cast, I think there coulda been some decent awesomeness there...

I saw somewhere that this movie is going to hit Netflix right away. I’ll watch it then for sure.

I unknowingly spoke with Miss Portman back in 2007. She was doing a small, independent film down in Nevada. They were shooting in an old Casino, with the movie set in the early 1950's.

She was outside standing on the sidewalk and I asked her what was going on.....She filled me in on what was going on and we chatted a bit for a few minutes. She was very friendly.

She is REALLY small...but absolutely beautiful.

It was months later when I found out EXACTLY who I had been talking to.

Huge Natalie Portman fan here. I've seen every one of her films in the theater (except Planetarium. That one had too limited a release.)

So, I'm guessing that you saw her filming Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights, where she plays a card shark that teams up for a bit with Norah Jones. I really liked that film. Many people felt that WKW's ethereal ambience didn't transfer over well to an American cast as opposed to his Hong Kong films, but I thought his cinematography was absolutely gorgeous.

FWIW, the film took place now, not the '50s. Big Grin Was it the scene where they were in Vegas, or the Hotel Nevada in Ely?

She's one of few actresses that I find genuinely pretty.

OK for the fans...I looked up some info and here's the rest of the story. It wasn't 2007 as I found the receipt from my headlamp lens replacement in Reno later in the trip. And in my journal of the trip I had written her name and a bit of the story. I'd forgotten a small bit of this....

It was 2006 when I took a bike trip with a buddy from MT. We separated as he wanted to check out something and I wanted to go to Rachel, NV near area 51. Anyway somewhere along the way...

I was overnighting in Ely at a little motel on the edge of town. I had eaten dinner and took a walk downtown while smoking an after dinner cigar. I was still in my dusty heavy pants and boots, with a BMW Motorad T-Shirt.

There were some barricades, banks of studio lights outside a little cafe/casino on the Main street. That was where they were filming. I was able to walk right up and I was reading a sign, stating basically ;"There is filming going on, if you don't possibly want to be filmed, you are warned to not enter".

As I'm reading , there's a little gal standing outside in a waitress outfit just to my left on the sidewalk. She says to me "I love the smell of Your cigar".

My immediate response to that has always been... "I always carry a spare cigar, if You wish to join me".

She laughed. Now it hits me she was probably in this, as her clothing looked sort of 1950's not current. And I could see she had some moderately heavy make up. And she was a real looker! But so little!

So she starts telling me it's a romantic film about a couple of girls and their adventures. And it takes place in New York and Las Vegas and this location was to be Las Vegas, a small Casino with a restaurant.

She asked me if I was local? I told her I was from Montana, on a quick vacation on my motorcycle.

She asked what I had for a bike as well as where I was from in MT and what I did for a living. I STILL had NO idea who she was. Though she looked familiar.

I also remember I almost asked her.. "So anyone really famous in this"? LOL.

Now a young woman with a clipboard, with a stop watch attached, comes up and tells her she will be needed shortly.

She held out her hand and I shook it. She told me "Be safe on that motorcycle" and away she went.

I hung around a bit, then saw Miss Clipboard again. I asked her "Who was that"?

She looked at me sort of not believing I had asked that, for maybe 1/2 a second.
"It's Natalie Portman".

I commented on how beautiful she was and mentioned she seemed so "normal". Talking to an Old Guy on the street in dusty biker clothes and all. I forget the reply but she stated something along the lines that "She was easy going" or "She is down to earth".

I hung out for maybe another 15 minutes and that was it.

What has always remained with me, was how small she was, how absolutely dead gorgeous she was and how she actually seemed interested in what I had to say.
She was not at all pretentious or expecting me to treat her anyway differently than I did. She was simply a regular person. I was of course polite to her, but I am to everyone.

THAT is the whole story.

That's an awesome story. You sure meet a lot of famous people filming movies on location! Ah yes, it was probably 2006 because the film was released in 2007. The film also had a sizable part taking place in Memphis. That part featured Rachel Weisz too.

Did the woman look like this?

I've worked with two people that were in the Boston area when Natalie was attending Harvard. One girl was also at Harvard and would see Nat walking around campus. Her comment to me, "She's really short!"

Another coworker was at a copy place when Nat asked her for some change. My coworker's friend freaked out when that happened. My coworker asked her friend, "What's wrong with you?" Her friend said, "You gave change to Natalie Portman!" My coworker said, "Damn! She's really short!"

I find it amusing that everyone who meets Nat always remembers her short stature. Big Grin

This movie got a bit no from the wife. I watched it to the end, but it was one of those open ended ones that I really didn't even care about.

I'm not a great movie-goer, but The Professional is one of my favorites as well, and I loved her work in it.

I have long held that Natalie Portman is the most talented actress there is. The Professional was excellent, but she really struck me in Beautiful Girls. Garden State was great as well. Heck, I can't think of a movie that she was bad in. There were, however, bad movies that, despite her best efforts, still sucked. Brothers comes to mind. Her acting was Oscar-worthy, but the film was so poorly done and poorly miscast, that it was quickly forgotten.

She is a gem. Yes, liberal as the day is long (although I'm confident that I could convert her), but stunningly beautiful, intelligent, beautiful, well-spoken, beautiful, talented, and did I mention beautiful?

I did watch Annihilation the other day, and despite Natalie, I didn't much care for it.

My wife and son really like sci-fi. I typically only like really good sci-fi movies. We all figured that Annihilation would be good with Natalie Portman in it, in addition to the other known cast members. If I had to sum it up for the three of us, I guess I'd say the movie was just okay. We were expecting more. It was a bit too weird for us.
