I was looking for a different Mencken quote and came across this quote. I’m not sure what year it is from but it struck me how much a 50+ year old quote still rings true today.

“The typical American of today has lost all the love of liberty, that his forefathers had, and all their disgust of emotion, and pride in self-reliance. He is led no longer by Davy Crocketts he is led by cheer leaders, press agents, word mongers, uplifters.” -Henry Louis Mencken

"Structural engineering is the art of moulding materials we don't understand into shapes we cannot precisely analyze, so as to withstand forces we cannot really access, in such a way that the community at large has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance." Dr. A. R. Dykes

I suspect that H. L. Mencken would be a bit less than pleased with Baltimore in 2021.
