Punk was never meant to last. It was impossible to keep up the spontaneity and originality of that period without becoming predictable. I do think of it as a forest fire to cleanse what came before in order for people to free themselves of the old rules ushering in New Wave/College and all those other post-punk bands. To me, punk isn't how a band or artist sounds or looks. Its not about Doc Martins or mohawks, pat labels, or being obscure. Its all about the DIY spirit with a healthy gob of spit. I can still see it in certain bands who aren't labeled "punk", even classical musicians, novelists, to filmakers. The "punk spirit" continues to live.
But I'm not sure if something like the 70's will happen again anytime soon. (If someone with the impact like Iggy and the Stooges or New York Dolls to start that momentum came out today I'd be flabbergasted.) Today, anything with any kind of momentum gets consumed by corporate culture and regurgitated for mass consumption and too many artists are happy to sign on the dotted line (make money while you can). The 70's was a unique time because the powers that be didn't understand what it was back then and the bands were more varied so it was hard to pin down a "formula". There was also a stigma against "selling out". Punk bands of the 70's each had their own sound and their own look instead of fitting into some "punk label". They weren't concerned about that because they were defining it for themselves. At least that's how I appreciate it. This message has been edited. I saw Pegboy open up for Social Distortion in '92. I can't say I liked them too much. I'll have to give 'em another listen. |

I dug out my Misfits coffin box set in honor of Halloween. My poor wife had never heard of them! Said it sounded like a young Elvis singing for the Ramones.

"Punk" was my aesthetic (and to a certain extent, it still is). Late 70's to me was The Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Television, The Damned, Johnny Thunders, Stiff Little Fingers, The Only Ones, The Jam, etc. Early 80's included LA bands such as X (the best), Black Flag, The Dickies, and The Minutemen, rounded out by "Post-Punk" bands such as Husker du, The Replacements, The Soft Boys.
I remember seeing X at the Whisky A Go Go and being one of the few people with longish hair. I thought I was going to get my ass handed to me by the skins. To me, punk wasn't just "fast music" and a mohawk, but a certain attitude and credibility. "Did IQ's just drop sharply while I was away?"- Ellen Ripley, Aliens, 1986 |

Wow...a lot of my favorite bands are listed in this thread. Angry Samoans, Husker Du, The Clash, Fear, Bad Brains, Descendents, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Ramones, X, Minor Threat, I could go on and on. They all get pretty heavy rotation at my house.
I know they don't qualify as old school punk but The Cows, The Jesus Lizard, and New Bomb Turks get a nod from me too. There's just not much being made now that I really enjoy. My oldest boy listens to the new pop punk garbage that is being pumped out now but I often find my CDs in his room so I think there may be hope for him. |

That was my punk back in the day. Been a long time since I've listen to them. What about the first two from Suicidal Tendencies. That was great music Others MOD, SOD. Love DRI but that's more thrash metal to me. |

New Bomb Turks! Loved them. I used to go to Columbus to see them when I went to college in Dayton. Not my era. I hit my teen years to GnR, Def Leppard, Ozzy, Skidrow, Scorpions, Slaughter, etc.
However, once Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, etc. filled my head I stepped a little further over and got into the Ramones, Social Distortion, etc. Only lately have I been expanding my musical catalog though to far more bands than I was introduced to back in the my day. ======================= SigPro2022, .40S&W Glock 26 O.D.
