I'm not into rock but my very first LP that I bought was Black Sabbath Master of Reality. I took it home and played it. I don't think I knew the band before I bought it nor have I listened to any of their songs on the radio. I was listening to pop music channels.
The albums I bought after that were all current jazz albums - Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Tomita, etc.
