List: Songs most 40-somethings should know and be able sing most words
Lol. That Social D song is 200+ BPM and in F#.
He's looking for easy playing acoustic tunes, go easy on the guy.
The problem with 40-somethings (and I are one) is that a lot of our music was in the grunge or punk range. Crazy tunings like drop B, funky time sigs like 5/4 etc. The reason everyone likes the 60s-70s stuff is because it's easier to play, and therefore more common or popular in impromptu acoustic sessions.
If you want easy to play and fun, try some stuff like Bryan Adams. Summer of 69, songs like that are easy to play and everyone knows the words.

No Journey "Don't Stop Believin' " or Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"?

Bionic218 is right on. He's looking for easy, 3-chord songs to bang out on a beach guitar, not complicated chord progressions and tunings. That's why I made a list of simple but timeless classics that most people will know. Certainly 40-somethings. If it were millenials, yeah, different story.

I'm 45 and know almost every song mentioned so far (I am far from a music enthusiast as well), so stick with the ones that stood the test of time with wide airplay from late '60s to now and you'll be good to go.

I think an acoustic version of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" might be fun.
And I just learned the TMBG version is actually a cover! Original is from the 1950s!!

This is my own age group. It was more for reminders. It’s appreciated but some of the songs, while good, I wouldn’t know more than a few words.
They can be a little more complicated to play but alternate tunings, aside from just a capo, generally wouldn’t work.

I have no idea if your list meets the criteria, but I love it. Add in “Closing Time” by Semisonic mentioned earlier and I am very pleased.

That's what I get for going off my memory. I've had a few Alice in Chains songs in my current rotation and I guess the name seeped in there somehow.
Thanks for the correction.

Three chords, easy lyrics, great melody, fun song all around by a really cool band that almost everyone knows.
