Well, new to me. It was at a price that I couldn't pass up so I just picked up this 2005 R1200GS with 23K. Here it is as I bought it.

This pic was taken this week. I changed the seats to a single Sargent one and replaced the lowered shocks with the stock ones. I also removed the aftermarket rear backrest, factory upper rear rack, headlight modulator, reflective tape on the luggage, and gave it a good detailing.
I like that the rear rack is now level with the top of the saddle bags. This makes for a great place to carry extra stuff like camping gear.

Nice bike! I had a 2000 GS from 2000 until 2007 and really enjoyed it. Currently riding a 2008 R1200R, it won't do fire roads like the GS but it works well on the pavement.

Thanks Audio. I rode a 2000 R1150GS for a few years and once I corrected the surging I enjoyed it. This 1200 just seems so much peppier and smoother, and is noticeably lighter. Being an 05 it has the servo ABS brakes. They work OK but I would certainly rather they not be there.

The 1200R is the other bike I was keeping an eye out for. (I have a R100R) They did a nice job on the 1200R using the full powered engine and low muffler. I've not ridden one but it must be a real fun ride!

I like it a lot better with your mods. The brown seat looked really odd on a bike with that type of style. Removing the back seat made it look much cleaner.

Nice ride you have there.

Not sure if you already frequent This Site but it's great for anyone interested in motorcycle touring. There is an adventure section also where there are tons of GS owners.

Thanks for the compliments frankenaug and Blackdeek. No I wasn't aware of SportTouring.net. I just checked it out and it looks like a site, I just bookmarked it.

The cosmetic and mechanical changes you have made to that bike are phenomenal - I don't think I have ever seen a brown leather seat before???!!!! It looks awesome. You said you were given a price too good to pass up - would you be willing to share this info?

Thansk and great work

Yeah the brown leather seat is .... different looking on this bike.

I picked it up for $7,100 but what made me bite was the stuff that came with it that I could take off and sell. The above mentioned Mayer seats are sold for $150, the stock low seat $110, the lowered Hyperpro shocks will go for $550-$600, bar-backs sold for $75, headlight modulator sold $45, rear rack maybe $90-$100. The stock shocks were used for 15K and came with it. Also their $50 deductible extended warranty through July 2013 was transferrable to me for $100 which gave me some piece of mind. I did pay $265 for the Sargent seat though.

Always been a fan of the GS's. Pretty much the only bike you'll ever need.

A few years ago, while staying at a hotel in VA, I was talking to a guy who had an 80's Beemer with 80,000 miles on the clock. He said he loved the bike, but wished it would break down so he could buy a newer one.

Glad you axed the brown seat. That just didn't look right.

You got the FASTEST color too!

Heck of a buy. You did very well. I have a spare set of the OEM vario cases if you ever need them. Replaced mine with Micatechs alum caases a few years back.

Few problems with the bike that can't be fixed. The OEM battery is small and weak for some folks...especially in colder climates. Theres a larger, taller replacement that is a 30 minute total time adaptation, but fixes the problem.

And some complain about surging...one can chip the bike to even out the fuel flow. Never had any issues with mine though. Chips add a bunch of HP too.

Your gonna LOVE it! Congrats.

Thanks guys! The PO installed a new BMW battery this year. I keep all my bikes plugged into a charger when not ridden. I'll probably stick an Odyssey in whenever this one fails. (Hopefully not for a few years?)

Allen...you get a KLR, then you get a Wee, now you want a Ural? You're almost as out of control as I am! Big Grin

Not wanting to sound like a broken record. I ;ove the GS beemers you got a great deal. I believe those sold new for around 15K.
You said something about wishin you were in Texas. From Northern Wv. you should be able to make it to texas in 2 days easy or 1 day hard riding. You can do it.
