Alternative rock =/= metal.
The Gathering played Wacken Open Air (1995), thus they're metal. They were not only one of the first Doom/Death bands to use keyboards as a permanent instrument, they also were on of the first metal bands to have female singer, and not as a guest or backing singer. All those female fronted bands that were popular 10 or so years ago, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence etc, The Gathering did it first, and arguably better.
