And I have a milkshake...

(I guess my original quote wasn't very recognizable. That or the movie didn't have as many memorable quotes as I remember).

Anyone else think there really isn't an Eli? We never see those two together, nor do we see Paul after Eli showed up.

It's just Paul pretending to be his not existent twin so he can renege on the earlier agreement with Plainview.

No, they are two distinct characters. Their demeanors are different. Of course, it's the same actor playing both roles, but they are intended to be twins.

BTW, how would you categorize There Will Be Blood? I agree with the director of this film- it's a Horror film. Just listen to that "music" at the beginning of the first scene. It sets the tone for the entire film. That music says "This is not going to be pleasant."

I'd consider it a suspense drama.

Oh, and regarding the idea that Paul and Eli are one and the same, not even Daniel Plainview believed that. In the milkshake scene, he says this to Eli:

"I broke you and I beat you. It was Paul who told me about you. He's the prophet. He's the smart one. He knew what was there and he found me to take it out of the ground, and you know what the funny thing is? Listen... listen... listen... I paid him ten thousand dollars, cash in hand, just like that. He has his own company now. A prosperous little business. Three wells producing. Five thousand dollars a week."

That's a lie, of course, calculated to make Eli feel bad. Plainview paid Paul 500 dollars, not 10,000, which Eli would know if he were Paul, and which Plainview would not say if he thought Eli and Paul to be one and the same. And all that stuff about Paul having his own company yadda yadda- pure fiction on Plainview's part.

It does seem, though, that the director played the scene with Paul in such a way as to leave doubt about identities.

The scene at the bar where he realizes his "brother" isn't who he says he is, subtle genius.

Daniel felt something wasn't right the whole time, and later confirms it, but that was the moment.

As luck would have it, it’s on Netflix. I watched it again last night and I caught things I never noticed before.

Great flick!

Something else director Anderson did in this film was to have a vintage movie camera lens adapted to a modern camera and used it for one or more scenes.

Here's a scene from near the beginning of the film using that 1910-vintage 43mm Pathe lens.

It's subtle, but you can see artifacts from this century-old lens. Look on the left side of the frame. See how the vertical edge of the window from bows out a bit? This is called 'barrel distortion' and is not uncommon in older optics. Also, note how the edges of the window look fuzzy, as if different colors of an object don't line up as they should. This is known as 'chromatic abberation'. You can see this type of of defect if you look at the edges of the image from inexpensive binoculars.

Pretty neat to see a lens being used from roughly the same time period as the scene being shot.

Wonder what Plainview’s last words were meant to be?

Was he finished...talking to Eli....or??
