The other was Siberia starring Keanu Reeves. As the title suggests, the movie takes place in Russia. Where most of the population speaks -- you guessed it -- Russian. (By the way, even the most die-hard Keanu Reeves fan would be hard pressed to enjoy this movie, sub-titles or no).

Subtitles were not a problem with this movie with me.
Terrible action and an even worse ending.
Very disappointing. Frown

Other movies with subtitles completely - I will not watch.

On the other hand I some times have to turn on CC when I watch late at night and don't want the wife yelling at me to turn it down when she goes to bed. Eek

i don't mind subtitles. what i'd like to have a choice on (dvd menus, streaming service audio options ) is whether they are combined with closed captions for the hearing impaired - i.e. [ phone ringing ] [ music playing ] [ dog barking ] etc.

I prefer movies be done authentically and don't mind the subtitles for other languages.

English to English bugs the hell out of me and I find it distracting.

If a person has even the slightest accent, people feel like they need to subtitle their speech. I just don't get it.

Also to that point, Jackie Chan's Who Am I? has an English speaking character whose lines are dubbed in English. Since the movie was made for a Chinese audience, his lines were originally dubbed in Chinese but were then re-dubbed back to English. It's quite noticeable and really annoying.

Yes. This is a plot by the new world order folks. I think George Soros is behind it.

I like the foreign language. It does feel more real to me. I have enjoyed the show Narcos, which seems to be almost half Spanish sometimes. But it is set in Columbia and Mexico. We know Escobar spoke Spanish.

If you don't like this practice, don't watch those movies. Easy.

Got to watch Das Boot with the subtitles, same with Kung Fu Hustle

I like foreign films w/ subtitles, mainly b/c rarely do the voice actors in a dubbed version do justice to the delivery by the original actors.

Agreed. The dubbed translations are read by acting hacks for the most part.

I've seen the dubbed version of "Das Boot." Or, I should say I've seen about 20 minutes of it. It sucks.

Some of my favorite movies were the black-and-white autier films of Ingmar Bergman, Jean-Luc Godard, and those of that ilk. Their cinematography was excellent, character development superb, and story-telling sublime. It's hard to not watch films like "The Seventh Seal" with rapt attention.

I suspect it's a bit of adult-onset ADHD stimulated by the hyperactive world we've become. We (I) attempt to multi-task because we (I) have to "get things done." It's difficult for me to think, "I'll start the dishwasher when the movie is over" because by the time the movie ends, I'll have forgotten all about the dishwasher.

Put me in the pro subtitle camp. I just finished The Americans and was always impressed by the fluent Russian spoken in that and have always been a fan of foreign movies.

It does bother me A LOT when:

1- when the spoken words and the subtitles text don't match exactly or close enough (same language).

2- when the translated text makes no sense because the one who did it has absolutely no idea what is the subject (lacks background and context) or is not versed enough to know or can't understand certain expressions, sayings, technical lingo, etc.).
3- It is, over all, poorly done.

I want to know why I have to keep the volume up when watching subtitled works. Turning it down seems to make it harder to read.

Sort of like turning the radio down to back up, but diffrent. Smile

I don't mind subtitles. In fact, with my hearing getting worse, I actually know what they are saying. Smile

Been watching the remastered "Miami Vice" with subtitles. I like it - dialog and songs.

Saints and Soldiers is a great movie. Have not watched in years. Need to add it to the list.

I don’t watch anything without subtitles/CC anymore. Just a way of life with 3 boys that are never quiet.

I recall my first subtitled movie.
Life Is Beautiful in the theater. Boy was I pissed when the movie started rolling then about 15 minutes in forgot all about it and Life is Beautiful is one of my favorite film of all time.
I have watched it dubbed in English and shows how ugly the English language is.

Then came along Brotherhood of the Wolf. Kind of started to dig foreign films.
