Yeah... I got maybe 100 pages into the first book, put it down, and never picked it back up.

I read a LOT. I have read thousands of sci-fi/fantasy novels. Off the top of my head, I can only recall quitting two sci-fi/fantasy novels and never going back to them. One was an absolute garbage self-published Kindle book that read like it was written by a horny, illiterate middle schooler. The other was "A Game of Thrones."

It’s the adult version of Harry Potter complete with fucking.

At the very core of both is the escapism what-if fantasy of unknowingly being a central character of being special. (I’m waiting to watch the final season so don’t tell me how it turns out.)

Harry Potter went big because kids could vicariously identify as having a boring nondescript life in this world but they might have special powers with a special lineage is the fantasy world of Harry Potter. I suspect RPGers can hope their favorite GOT character and, vicariously, themselves turns out to be the ultimate savior of the seven realms.

It’s a formulaic theme of a type of successful novels.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

It's boring, juvenile comic book garbage in my book. It's not entertaining, not useful in any way, not informative or enlightening. What it is, is a complete waste. Show me historical events, or show me at least something that could happen. It's intelligence-insulting soft porn mixed with video game fantasy bullshit.

Boring, and made very annoying by the ubiquity of this stupid shit. I'd be embarrassed for people but it would be pointless. They wouldn't get it.

I’ve heard people call it the best tv show of all time. I have trouble not laughing right in their face...

I forget which prominent author said this, and I’ll have to paraphrase, but a good author is one who has the utmost respect for their readers. I’ve always gotten the exact opposite impression from George R.R. Martin. I could never watch a show where the author seemingly delights in devastating the viewership at every turn, especially after a friend summed up the show to me this way a few years back: “You’ll get to like a character, and then they’ll be murdered in the most gruesome or humiliating way possible, and that’s pretty much the whole show, over and over again.”

People have been trying to get me to watch it for years. When I feel that much social pressure to conform to pop culture, it’s a real turn-off and I usually go the other way.

Never seen it or been interested in it. Same for the whole superhero franchise thing.

I do enjoy a good Para rant though. 9.5/10 Big Grin

Hmmmmmm. I am sorry but I just do not understand why missing work would be acceptable. I guess their lives must be very ordinary and their minds devoid of intelligent thought. Here is a bit of the story with the link:

The series finale of “Game of Thrones” Opens a New Window. could be responsible for a lot of empty office desks Opens a New Window. on Monday, according to new survey data.

An estimated 10.7 million U.S. employees say they plan to skip work on Monday, the day after the long-awaited conclusion to HBO’s hit fantasy series, according to a survey from the Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated. However, absences may just be part of the problem for employers, as about 27.2 million employees said the finale could cause them to miss work, show up late, work from home or otherwise be less productive than they would on a normal Monday.

The kid I feel sorry for is the one who gets named "Of". His siblings are named "Game" and "Thrones" but the unfortunate one gets a preposition.

I agree. Fuck this show. My employees talk about it incessantly and when I ask a group of them if they are clocked in when they are talking about this shit it breaks it up pretty quick. I mean, I don’t mind people being interested and excited about things but this is ridiculous.

P.

I’m always dubious about articles like that that say people will be “missing work”. Are they missing it like calling out sick or being a no show, or are they taking vacation time? If someone was to take vacation time, I don’t care what the reason is as long as they’ve got the hours; to each their own. But if they are no-showing or calling out, that’s another matter. That’s what addicts do.

Yeah I do not understand. I go to work even when I have a legitimate reason not to go.

I’m glad it’s finally over. No more talk of this shit at work. I watched the first episode when it came out and said nah, it’s shit.

I can’t believe people would miss work for this. WTF is wrong with people.

People at work talk about this too. Basically it always ends the same way, me berating another officer about how I now percieve them for watching Dungeons and Dragons live action on ice. Since they know it annoys me it gets brought up often needless to say.

To show how out of touch I am, until a couple months ago, I thought this was an actual video game series. Sounds like I haven't missed much.
