Dad used to collect coins. Somewhere he's got books full of them. I can't really say I "collect" them, but I try hang on to interesting coins I stumble across, whether the be old, or foreign, or whatever. I found an Indian rupee in the parking lot at work, and one of my friends gave me a Singapore dime she got in some change.

I'm pretty much the same way. I have a ziplock bag in a drawer where I keep odd coins that I find, but I wouldn't say I collect them. I do have a couple that are probably worth a couple of bucks, but mostly I just think they are neat.

I have a rather large collection. I don't add to it very often anymore. But I try to stay current on whats happening in the market because I still ocasionally will buy something.

I was buying Morgan and Peace dollars quite a bit for awhile there. Was also buying pennies - mostly old wheatbacks by the roll.
For a time I also was buying/collecting paper money - errors and then fancy serial numbers and star notes.

It gets to be an expensive hobby, they call it "The Hobby of Kings", that's why I don't do it much anymore.

I figure that this mini horde will only increase in value and will be a nice surprise for the kids or Grandkids years down the road.

I did until 1982 (U.S coins). I have picked up a good number of foreign coins since but they always went to my son, to whom the small coin collection also went to. Coin collecting can be very facinating and involves many things common to collecting firearms.

I have a ton of foreign coins. I have my dad's collection from his 27 years in the Navy and mine from 18 years in the Navy.

When my dad was stationed in Naples Italy, I used to buy coins from all over from the vendors in Thieve's Alley near the main train station downtown.

I dabbled in it for a few years. I've forgotten much of what I learned about what's valuable or rare. One neat thing for me was I learned alot about world and U.S. history by studying coins.

I still keep current on U.S. Proof Sets and Silver Eagles.

I dabble in silver proof coins. My favorite coins are:
Riga, LV 800th anniversary
US Benjamin Franklin "Founding Father" coin
UK 1998/2006 Britannia

I collect mostly just key date coins, and mint and proof sets. It really is expensive to collect like you could 30 years ago. I find now days the ones that are in it now usually are it because an earlier family member was. I don't own anything worth ten's of thousands, but I have some good ones.

Thayer, go into the lounge on the S&W forum and a guy has some interesting stories about collecting coins.

I started in the mid 60's from my dad and collected silver and wheat backs. Got into a little gold in the 70's and error coins. Still have most of my stuff. Nice collection of $2 1/2 Indian gold. About 4 yrs ago my wife's friend was leaving for N.Y to live, had a garage sale, went there and bought some stuff so she could get some extra money. Asked her about any guns and other junk, she said no.

Talked to her about a week later after she got to N.Y. She mentioned day after garage sale she went to bank to cash in coins and got a big hassle with the teller. She cashed in about $240.00 in silver dollars (she didn't think I'd be interested) and got paper money dollar for dollar. Cashier thought she wanted a premium on the silver and she said no. I couldn't sleep for a week after that, was her father's collection, alot of uncirculated pieces. Frown

I started collecting coins at about the age of ten. Saved coins I got from my paper route. I had a complete collection of circulated Franklin halves and a bunch of those dreaded Whitman cardboard coin folders. I added it all tomy dad's collection when I went into the service. Later, I got my father's collection after he passed away. I started building a 20th Century Type set and after that, a collection of Liberty Bust halves. I ended up selling the collection after my son said he wasn't interested in the collection. I bought a piece of property on a lake in Michigan.

I think I may have some proof sets somewhere. John, if you want them, let me know.

Thanks blueye. I'll check out S&W. Yes those stories of cashing in old collections are horrifying.

Mercury Dimes and then proof sets for me. My dad is working on a nice Buffalo Nickel set. Proof sets are a good way to start out. Find a coin you like and then see if you can get a full set, it may take some time but it's neat to try and hunt down the right coin.

I have a 1934 Mercury dime that's got some wear on it. Is it worth anything?

Just curious.

The latest Guide Book I have is the 2006 edition of "The Red Book". Kind of like the Blue Book is to cars.

The 1934 Mercury dime in Extremely Fine - only slight wear - is listed as $3.50.

The next grade lower - Very Fine - is listed at $1.50
