So one of my friends from the PD is retiring and I feel I should get him something for his years of service. He was my sister & I's DARE officer in middle school (we both won the DARE bear) he was my resource officer in high school, we have taught summer kids camps together & have taught hunter ed together for the past 5 years. I am not sure what to get him? any ideas anyone?

I think any gift you give the person would mean a lot to him. Doesn't have to be LE related, just something personal. Does he hunt or fish? What about a years supply of minnows or other bait? Some custom lures? Can you ask his spouse or a child if he wants something? Is he staying local?

FWIW: When I retired I had a ton of flashlights and knives in my locker at work, in my truck and at home that I handed out to fellow officers over my last few days. Wink

+1 on getting him something associated with off-duty hobby or sport he participates in.

I think pulicords has it all right in what he said. He has a good knife from one of his daughters who is a Border agent (nice knife he is proud of it) and all the tacticool accesories he could ever want and also just got himself a Ruger LCP. I think the hobby idea is great he takes canoe trips every summer and is an avid shooter not a very extravigant person thats why im stumped, gift cards are an easy out. I'm just not creative enough to come up with something good.

Well, if you bought the guy a TAG or something along those lines, the guy might like that. Not sure how many of us would reject a gift like that.

Does he need canoe paddles? Not sure how much they cost and what you want to spend.

Sounds to me like he just needs a hobby. Get him one of those first.

How about a very nice bent wooden canoe paddle? I went on a canoeing orientation trip for college and all the professors who went every year had fancy wooden paddles with an angled blade to ease paddling. I was very jealous.

The canoe paddle is a great idea. I'm thinking along the lines of spruce/cedar laminate such as those made by Mitchell's, which are very attractive and functional. I have one of their Greenland style kayak paddles, which has become my favorite.

I definately would NOT get him something LE related. He's retiring.

I say get him something for a hobby. That's what he can use.

My first question would be: What's your price range?

A copy of "Deliverance"? Razz

How about some of those fancy mail order steaks? Even if you don't have a grill they cook up nicely.

If the dept. isn't giving his badge on a mounting, that's always a nice gift.

Talked with him this afternoon at the FD he was telling me he really wished he was able to get 2 extra 20rnd mags per cruiser for there ar-15's before he retired but the funds arent there. They carry 2 20rnd mags coupled together on the gun but NO reloads. The PD has 8 marked vehicles carrying rifles, so I figured 20 mags would give them 2 reloads per vehicle & 4 extra. My idea is to donate 20 20 rnd ar-15 mags in his name to the PD. I think he would like that just as much as any other gift. Any thoughts?
