Newsman: [trying to interview GIs returning to base after a hard day of fighting] Hey, word down at division is you guys can't take this hill. What do you have to say about that? In fact Senator Kennedy insists you guys haven't got a chance at all.

Sgt. Frantz: [glares at Newsman for a few seconds] You really like this shit, don't you? It's your job, a story, wait here like a fucking vulture for someone to die so you can take a picture.

Newsman: [becoming angry] It's my job...

Sgt. Frantz: I got more respect for those little bastards up on the hill. They take a side, you just take pictures. You probably don't even do your own fucking!

Newsman: What?

Sgt. Frantz: You listen to me. We're gonna take this fucking hill, Newsman. And if I catch you on top taking pictures of any of my people, I will blow your fucking head off. You haven't earned a right to be here. *You got that?*

Lots to love about FMJ, but since it's been done, how about the unknown PFC speaking to the Sarge (Sam Elliot) from We Were Soldiers Once

PFC: "Good morning, Sarge."

Elliot: "How the fuck do you know what kind of morning it's going to be?"

IMHO, along with FMJ, and Apocolypse Now, this completes the trilogy of the best "Nam" movies ever.

"Mike Durant! We won't leave you behind!"

When I read that sequence in the book I was moved to tears. When I saw it in the film, the same thing happened. I know it didn't turn into the "Delta kicking down the doors and dragging him out to safety" ending we all would have loved, but to Durant, at that time, it must have been like hearing angels singing.

Two from Gettysburg

General Buford
"You know whats going to happen here in the morning? The whole damn reb army is going to be here. They'll move through this town, occupy these hills on the other side and when our people get here Lee will have the high ground. There will be the devil to pay! The high ground! Meade will come in slowly, cautiously. New to command. They'll be on his back in Washington. Wire hot with messages 'Attack! Attack!'. So he will set up a ring around these hills. And when Lee's army is nicely entrenched behind fat rocks on the high ground, Meade will finally attack, if he can coordinate the army. Straight up the hillside, out in the open, in that gorgeous field of fire. We will charge valiantly... and be butchered valiantly! And afterwards men in tall hats and gold watch fobs will thump their chest and say what a brave charge it was. Devin, I've led a soldier's life, and I've never seen anything as brutally clear as this."

Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
"Well, gentlemen, that hill is steep. It's rocky. It's bare. To come straight up it is impossible. No. The Reb army is going to swing around. It's gonna come up through that notch right over there. It'll move under the cover of trees, try to get 'round the flank. And gentlemen... *we* are the flank. Gentlemen.
God go with you"

Here's a couple:

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: I wonder what was going through Custer's mind when he realized that he'd led his men into a slaughter?
Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, Custer was a pussy. You ain't.

--------------------------

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: I think you oughta get yourself an M-16.
Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.

I love that one too. The scene before that where the Sgt shows up naked with three purple hearts pinned on and they say "Even he was scared of Sgt. Maj. Plumley" was priceless.
