a western set in 1855-1860 west of new mexico/denver.

a fella shows up in a town of 230 people that he has never heard of , all he has is in a freight wagon pulled by four stout horses.

medium build w/ a friendly face and calm demeanor and good manners.

the town has needed a second livery for over two years , but instead of opening a new one he buys 50% of the existing one and adds a shed on the back to live in.

9 months later he is well liked by most and trusted by even more, after two years he has the normal amount of debt at the bank, the store and a few other places but he has always made his payments on time.

He does not carry a gun, but borrows a rifle for the fall and spring turkey shoots, ( (he's come in second twice) , never seen in the saloon, the bawdy house or the gambling parlor, he makes monthly contributions to the school, both church's and the community chest.

after three years he decides to buy a dozen horses ,so he leaves on a nine day trip to purchase and return with them.

On the day that he leaves , two strangers from east of the Mississippi show up asking about a man who they say is "wanted" back east , with a drawing of a person who may or may not be Selby.

They persist in hounding the locals of the town about the man they (the local residents) call Selby .

after three 1/2 days no one knows why they are looking for him and these strangers are not Law enforcement or bounty hunters, then ,

the townies get together and start asking about Selby, what they don't know, what no one knows , and the few of them start to want answers as well.

The local sheriff questions the two strangers but all they say is that $ 165,000.00 in gold ingots are missing from shipment that was going by railroad to the west coast.

Someone from the town wires Selby and lets him know what is going on , back home.

any way . the lady at the millinery , that has been sweet on selby for more than five months, got in contact with her aunt , in canton ohio, ( she worked at a newspaper)

they were just finishing the trial for the robbed gold shipment in east St.Louis and found Sherman Clark and to others guilty , and sentencing would be in two weeks.

no mention was ever suggested about Selby Clark at the hearings.

The two strangers were leaving the morning that Selby returned to town .

two dozen people ran to the livery when they heard that he was back.
There were six people that were demanding payment for money owed to them by Selby, you've got till noon tomorrow , or we'll be taking those new horses as payment"

( a total of $134.00 )

Before Selby could get to the bank for the funds,
11 people that owed selby money paid their bills in full for a total of $122.00 and other friends donated the balance, to pay them all off, in full.

beside herself Christy ( from the millinery ) gave Selby a giant hug and Selby said that he should explain the whole mess, She said that there was no need, "lets forget it all"

as the camera pulls back , they walk twords her front porch at her home.

meanwhile, at the livery , a hired hand finds a bank book, he knows what it is but since he can not read , he turns it in to the bank owner, who tosses it on his roll top desk.

turns out that its not from his bank, but its from the bank where Selby was visiting, and it's got $2,100.00 in the account !

you can see the wheels turning in the bank managers head as the credits start to roll
