I didn’t get the impression he meant to leave it, just that there was a map. Everyone in FA seemed to think he left one, but he sure seemed surprised and annoyed that someone found him. I’m trying to remember but I think he even asked Rey how she found him, and he didn’t seem to k ow what map she was talking about. If he had deliberately left a map, why would he have to ask? He probably used R2 to pull the location from the archives and then didn’t delete his browsing history..... or something.

They definitely leave A LOT up to imagination of the viewer, which means we can fill in supporting facts/thoughts for any number of viewpoints. That’s a sign of bad story telling in my book, but it doesn’t completely ruin it for me.

Just got back from an iMax showing with the family. I didn't read any of these posts prior.

All specifics have been addressed, but in the end, for a good film, it all comes down to good writing, something this movie severely lacked. It was dreadful, or as my son called it, "cringy". This shitshow reminded me of a bad Walking Dead episode.

My son jokingly said the movie reminded him of the Harvey Dent line in The Dark Knight; "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"

Rey is still a total badass for no reason whatsoever. She is every modern girl's dream--be awesome at everything without having to do any work to earn it.

In every other Star Wars movie (including Rogue One), every major character has had extensive training or previous experience which lead up to their achievements on-screen. The sole standout being Anakin because his Force attunement is so great. But in Rey, we see someone with no experience with a lightsaber easily beat Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens then get a couple of days of training from Luke in The Last Jedi and going on to successfully resist Snoke's attempts to glean information from her before fighting off a bunch of his personal guard.

As someone who trains in martial arts, I of course noticed this, though did not write it up. Mostly just chalked it up as dramatic license (like in the Karate Kid movies), with the proviso that episode VIII fill in the information gap. That of course did not happen. Also how did Rey become a pilot? Why does she play with X-wing dolls? Why does she have the same mechanical skills that the young Anakin displayed?

Maybe part of the problem is lack of continuity from not having the same director through each of the trilogies. JJ does VII, Rian speeds off in another direction for VIII, then back to JJ for the double grand finale. JJ, you're our only hope, to answer the questions you raised in TFA that weren't even addressed in TLJ. (Yes, you could say that each of the IV-V-VI middle-trilogy films had different directors also, but we still had an overseeing visionary in George Lucas to keep the course plot).

Just occurred to me. It annoys me that Luke flipped the lightsaber over his shoulder instead of casting it in at their feet or to the side. Like it is a silly thing. Rather than, I reject this now.

Kathleen Kennedy is suppose to be the overseeing visionary now like Lucas was or like Kevin Feige is with the MCU.

I think they only thing they can do to square the Rey situation is that she was born of The Force like Anakin was. She was born specifically as balance to Ben Solo. That's why they are connected and why she was instantly good at everything.

Is it possible that Kylo was simply lying about Rey's backround? There does seem to be some "fluidity" with respect to truthiness and SW characters and their pasts.

On some level, Reys skill is explained by the fact that she has learned to let the force guide her. Its silly, but she is giving herself to its direction and guidance so that is helping her with her lightsaber fighting.

Still wouldn't be a replacement for years of actual sparring and training, but there is that.

But seriously, the entire Finn, Poe, casino plot was totally worthless and unnecessary.

Luke is right, the Jedi are failures and Yoda knew it, that's why he hid out and didn't train Luke from birth. Luke was the last Jedi, and Rey is the first of the new order.

Rey being nobody pisses me off because if you watch TFA again, Kylo clearly knows who she is or has some feeling about her. He flips out about "some girl" stealing the Falcon and getting away with Finn and BB-8, and he almost seems afraid of her, like he knows what she can do.

Snoke was obviously powerful, having no insight into him and where he came from is bullshit.

I think everyone is resolving Rey's prodigious nature as her unusual Force-sensitivity. At this point, what else is there? I still find myself grasping for any special angle to make it all feel real. Giving her a last name that starts with "Sky..." would be enough.

Honestly, I'd rather her last name be Palpatine...

Luke Skywalker said "laser sword"

When I was a kid if you called a lightsaber a laser sword you would have been mercilessly mocked and ridiculed

It was one of the ways we could always suss out the trekkies in our midst

"I particularly like when Luke used his laser sword to block the phaser blast..."

"Oh, you must be one of those Trekkie motherfuckers, aren't you"

Last Jedi was garbage. I can only assume that the director had a personal grudge against JJ Abrams and was beaten up by Star Wars fans as a child. Nothing else makes sense.

"Oh? You set things in motion in the first part of a trilogy that the most fanatical fans in the world will pick apart for years between movies? Yeah. Screw those plot strings. And screw you. And screw the fans childhood. Here is Leia as Mary Poppins. Dueces, I'm out."

I felt like the whole movie was a slap in the face to Star Wars fans.

My only hope is that the next one fixes some of the story problems already mentioned.

What the hell were all the Star Destroyers for?

They sat around and watched some “bombers” destroy the dreadnaught, then they cruised along like cops chasing a white bronco.

So many stupid things in this movie. So many

I saw it Friday, and liked it. After thinking a bit about all the negative thoughts here, I went to see it again.

I still liked it. Good God, what's wrong with me? I wonder if I'll still like when I see it with my kids next week when they're in town for the Holidays?

Wait, I just remembered an Easter egg that could save the franchise. Don't know if you noticed it, but we did get the fat Resistance pilot getting blown out of the sky.

What more can be said..wtf?

Not the worst but, this jumbled mess ranks right below ROTJ. Even the Rebels cartoon is better if for no other reason that it followed cannon and at 30-min an episode, they couldn't jam-in useless plot devices. This thing only confirms that a giant wet blanket called make sure a 12-year old gets it was thrown over the entire script writing. Good grief this was a mess. Disney is now, 1-1-1 with their SW franchise....R1 very good, TFA ok, and TLJ blah

My issue was with the whole non stop theme of "we are the resistance," as in #resist! The evil arms dealers, the multi cultural resistance, made up of hollywood elites no doubt. Ick.
