When was this part? Can't recall.
Right when Finn and his sidekicks get on the Star Destroyer.

What a steaming pile of crap.

So the Rebels build a secret base on a planet with a salt surface that turns red when pressure is applied. Why in the hell did they outfit the base with land speeders that required a mono-skid to work properly?? Nothing like announcing to the enemy where your attack force is coming from!

I feel like the writers were sitting around the tv while Game of Thrones was on and figured if they could bring Jon Snow back to life, they could do something similar with Leia.

This trilogy has jumped the shark harder and faster than The Hobbit and The Matrix. That’s an impressive feat...

That makes Kylo REN Johnny, and his crew the Cobra Kai. Strike first, strike hard, no mercy sir. And Daniel’s all “Ma, I gotta learn Karate”.

If Adam Driver went topless then Daisy Ridley should have went topless too. Emo/antifa/diversity just gone too far. Maybe Rey will end up training a new young Jedi, who’ll be the ultimate master, and the character will be transgender and it will be the Force that gave it both sex parts. Then it can make itself to get milk. Midichlorian milk!

The Skywalker men have always been a whiny bunch. 1-6 was basically Anakin and Luke, pleading, whining, and bitching.

I actually thought that part was funny. The original
trilogy used all kinds of everyday objects slightly dressed up as props, droids, etc.

Seeing the thing come up on the screen, thinking, "come on, that's just an iron," and then having it actually be an iron was a cute moment of poking fun at something goofy about the original trilogy.

I have seen all of the previous Star Wars movies multiple times in the theater. I am a huge SW nerd, and have been forever, as my forum name indicates.

I have zero desire to see this one again in the theater. None. First time that has happened in 10 movies and three 3D re-releases.

(Yes, 10)

Saw it tonight with the family and I'm mixed on it. On the surface, it's Star Wars, park your brain at the door and enjoy.

Then when I start thinking about it I get annoyed. The all inclusive politically correct crap. Laura Dern, really? Look out, mom commands a battle cruiser. The anti capitalist, industrial/military complex lecture during the casino scene. Poe's mutiny, ok you committed mutiny went against orders and took over a ship, don't worry about it, it's all good.

Saw it for the second time today with my son, who was in for Christmas. I liked it the first time. I liked it the second time. I think people forget the "fiction" part in "science fiction".

I can suspend my disbelief and 'believe' in the Force, FTL spaceships, sentient droids, thousands of sentient races in a vast galactic empire, etc.

However, just because it's "Science Fiction" does NOT mean that we have to settle for crap writing. Some of the great literature of our age is sci-fi - such as immortal and timeless works by Jules Verne and HG Wells. They have endured because of *good writing.*

Likewise, the original Star Wars was not the first sci-fi movie; my childhood was rife with cheesy schlocky movies that are mostly forgettable (or only enjoyable because of the cheese/camp factor (I'm looking at YOU, Flash Gordon and Masters of the Universe Wink ) ). Star Wars made such a huge impact and became a global sensation because of the STORY. They took the subject matter seriously.

I read where the people responsible for the (excellent) Battlestar Galactica reboot stated that the show wasn't about spaceships, space battles, or homicidal robots - it was about people. It, like Star Wars, succeeded because the shows were ultimately about people with whom we can relate. Their setting may have been futuristic and fantastic (I know it took place 100,000 yrs ago), but we can place ourselves into those stories and relate to them.

Luke's journey from restless farm boy to a military leader is the classic "Hero's journey." It's an ageless story that we can relate to (boy wants to be something more, meets wizened mentor, trains, grows (mentally, emotionally, physically), faces ultimate test of character, and emerges victorious (though, not without personal loss) and becomes who he is meant to be). Episode IV-VI weren't loaded down with politics or 'equality' issues - they told a story about a young man coming of age. It just so happened to take place in a world of spaceships and magic, not Dubuque, Iowa.

THIS is why I (and, I assume, so many others) are disappointed in this movie. They failed to take the story, and us, seriously. They figured "it's just sci-fi - slap a story together and stamp out a million toys and we will be good." This is not good enough for me. I expect more.

I've stated before about many other films/genres - I can suspend my disbelief over a LOT of stuff (Superman, X-men, Lord of the Rings/Fantasy worlds, Transformers, FTL space dramas, etc), but I cannot get over crap writing.

Hound Dog,

Well written (pun intended) Smile

I have no desire to see this movie again in the theaters or to purchase the Blue-ray.

I have never felt that way about a Star Wars flick.

All I can say is I agree with most of the criticism but I still liked it. I leave rational thinking at the door when I go to a movie. Not too interested in accuracy.

The Leia in space was one thing that really was silly. I get she was showing that she has the force, but it was just done very poorly.

The comedy was overdone and not really funny in most cases.

Other than that it was a fun space movie.

Yes, this. While I can identified many things wrong" with the movie, it was still fun to watch. The pretentiousness of some of the criticisms is pretty humorous to me. If you don't like it, you don't like it. That alone doesn't qualify the movie as "crap" anymore than my liking it qualifies it for an Oscar. It's just another silly movie.

Saw it last night. Meh. I am not going to reiterate the flaws of the film, just saying I agree with most of them. Perhaps the flaws previously mentioned is why I was having a hard time sitting through the entire film.

What I don't understand is the disparity of the critic reviews vs. typical viewers. I have seen more movies this past week than I have all year (two). The Greatest Showman was enjoyable start to finish, a great musical in my opinion, and a great movie. Yet, the critics hated it as it glossed over or omitted "the darker" parts of Barnum's life - The masses liked it. As I said in my review here, it is a musical, not a biography.

As someone here said, it is about the writing. Suspending belief is about making it even the slightest bit possible to the point where you want to believe it is. With the continuity errors and poor scripting, I cannot believe the critics (who are so artfully above us plebes) could get past the pablum that TLJ served.

Because movie critics are fucking idiots. They are just the internet trolls that happened to exist before the internet. They convinced themselves that this would be a huge hit and they didnt want to be on the wrong side of a $1 billion dollar movie. Their opinions have no more weight or validity than anyone, and they are absolutely for sale and influenced by outside pressure. I hate movie critics, if it's not 3 hours long, boring, and British it's no good, and the surest sign for me to stay away is when all the critics fawn over some movie.

Of course they can't enjoy the PT Barnum movie, it's not pretentious and PC so it's bad.

Movie critics are like wine snobs, totally full of shit and in love with their own bullshit

I saw it the other night, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan so I could could look past some of the movies faults, thought it was okay ... I like the ones made in the late 70's early 80's so much better... I dont think I even saw 1,2 or 3 (clone wars, jarjar binks, etc era)

Agreed. Good solid enedearing and lasting film consists of a good script/writing, great directing, casting, and acting. And a good cinematographer immensely helps as well as a producer that isn’t a corporate studio slug. I want to see intelligence on screen, action movie, Sci-fi, drama, black comedy, makes me no difference. When it’s dumbed down for the lowest common denominator I’m done with it. The comic book films have been especially poor. The first Thor film, Dr. Strange, and the Nolan/Bale trilogy were superb. The rest mostly shit. Rogue One was good, no great, but solid. TFA and the TLJ were terrible. TFA was predictable, and almost an ANH cover song, JJ playing it way way too safe. Then his typical shit directing. Rian did so well with Looper, such a great film, then took a huge dump on TLJ. Just a terrible script. F’ing amazing too. Star Wars will sell itself, so why not make a lasting film, I mean spend whatever, it’s gonna sell, so why not make it stunningly superb? Disney doesn’t care. These films are made by committee. So it’s not all on Rian.

I will say, Disney won’t see any more of my $. X-men, Marvel stuff, and now Star Wars, they can all wait for Netflix or Satellite as I’m tired of the poor work all the way around. The theater isn’t cheap any longer, especially 3D, XD, and IMAX. Almost $20 a ticket and I’m tired of being consistently let down. Another example, Guardians of the Galaxy. The first one was good, the second one was much more campy and poorly written, garbage imo. Star Wars now follows the same trend.
