Tom Hanks in a WWII movie, looks like it's a feature on Tin Can sailors.

Looks promising, disappointed that it's another Atlantic/European theater feature with the Nazi's, Hollywood's favorite boogeyman as the faceless, emotionless enemy. I guess any of Hornfincher's books wasn't compelling enough Roll Eyes

Note the headline below. I hate it when everything German from WWII is called "Nazi," but that's a whole other topic

Greyhound’ trailer puts Tom Hanks at the helm of a Nazi-hunting WWII destroyer

J.D. Simkins

Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks has traded in the beloved red cardigan of Fred Rogers for a Navy captain’s uniform in the first trailer for the World War II thriller “Greyhound.”

Sony Pictures dropped the trailer Thursday, showcasing Hanks as Capt. Ernest Krause, a first-time commander assigned the perilous task of a trans-Atlantic escort of a convoy of merchant ships, a mission that quickly goes awry after his destroyer, the fictional USS Keeling, is plunged into the Battle of the Atlantic.

Due to range limitations of Allied aircraft, the 37-ship convoy must survive five treacherous days of the journey without the luxury of air support, leaving Krause and his men vulnerable to fierce attacks carried out by the sinister wolfpack formations used by the Kriegsmarine’s Nazi U-boats.

Combating both the enemy and self-doubt at the helm of the Keeling, Krause must “bring hell from on high” onto the German submarines to ensure the survival of his men and the success of the convoy.

Based on the C.S. Forester novel, “The Good Shepherd,” and inspired by true events, the film is directed by Aaron Schneider (“Get Low”) and costars Elisabeth Shue (“Chasing Mavericks,” “Battle of the Sexes”), Stephen Graham (“Snatch,” “Gangs of New York”), and Rob Morgan (“Daredevil”).

Shelly Johnson (“Hidalgo,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) handled cinematography duties, while the 63-year-old Hanks penned the adapted script for the big screen.

“Greyhound” is slated to hit theaters everywhere June 12. Watch the trailer below.

will probably have to go see this. Tom Hanks and crew were here in Baton Rouge using the USS KIDD(DD661) for filming some of the scenes. This is a museum ship berthed on a floating cradle in the Mississippi River. .... "God bless our troops past/present/ and future". ........drill sgt.

I was in Baton Rouge for business when they were filming parts on a really cool destroyer. Lots of drones.

I think it will be a fun movie and one that I may actually go to a theater and see.

My maternal grandfather was a Gunners Mate in WW2. He would never talk about his time in the Navy but other family members and my Great Uncle who was also a GM during WW2 stated that the ship he served on was assigned to convoy escort.

I have studied various aspects of WW2 religiously mostly the ground war and the armor aspect of it.

This is a new avenue for me and I think I will enjoy it since I have not really studied the German Wolfpacks nor the missions of the us Convoys.

When I was a kid I watched all the TV “Combat” shows. There was always lots of shooting, but I don’t believe they fired real bullets.

blanks and puff charges that burst dirt to simulate bullet strikes are a whole different world compared to badly done cgi.

imagine Akira Kurosawa 's Sanjuro closing scene using cgi. The Shining elevator scene. Tora! Tora! Tora! dogfight scenes. The Blue Max. cgi would ruin those classics.

cgi blood samurai movies are a dime a dozen today - and cannot compare to the old way of using arterial spray pig's blood.

what is wrong with cgi? my take is that it's required sometimes - but other times it's lazy filmmaking. like the Coen Brother's True Grit. many didn't notice the cgi blood after Mattie shoots Tom Chaney - but for me, I can't unsee it and it could be done better without a computer.

i still buy tickets. I saw Midway (2019), which i knew to be a cgi-fest.

My problem is when they use CGI to make vehicles move and do things that they can’t really do, but just look cool. The recent Midway movie was a good example of that.

I'll go see it. I'm not huge on CGI but it has its places as long as its only used where needed an not as a replacement for practical effects and real sets.

I saw part of Midway on my last airline flight. The dive-bombers looked like something out of a video game, and the B-26 that almost crashed into Akagi looked horrible. I couldn't stomach to see the whole thing.

The "pearl harbor love triangle movie" was the most egregious example - they made dogfighting P-40s and Zeros look more like TIE fighters and X-Wings, with total disregard for the laws of physics.

This movie looks interesting, but the trailer doesn't fill me with much hope. There are at least two scenes of U-boats on the surface battling it out with destroyers. This did happen, but was quite infrequent. Most of the time, the escorts never even saw a U-boat, but sunk it with depth charges. This would be, of course, *too boring* for a major 'blockbuster,' so I expect to see a lot of the 'battle surface' fights.

Also, it may seem minor, but the art on the U-boat conning towers seems to be too big and colorful. In real life, many U-boats carried 'nose art' on their towers. Some were individual for that boat, and some art designated to which flotilla they belonged. The ones in the trailer were huge, covering most of the conning towers. I suspect they did this to make them look 'cooler.'

Now, I am not opposed to 'cool' visuals, but not at the expense of historical accuracy. I have no faith in Hollywood's ability to make an accurate war movie anymore (the last one I liked was Band of Brothers) (yeah, I know, HBO, not theatrical, but it's all the same). I just know too much about WWII to really enjoy most war movies.

Real escort work was a lot of tedium and boredom. The drama was literally life-and-death, but I'm not sure they will be able to portray that on 'the big screen' without resorting to a lot of 'hollywoodisms.'

Pretty sure they utilized this story from the USS Bodie and it's encounter with U-256. Certainly dramatic but, you're spot-on, escort duty was painfully boring with small bouts of anxiety. Would be interesting if they make note that convoy duty not only went to the UK but, Soviets, Gibralter, and Persia.

Pearl Harbor was a travesty at many points, the Aegis Cruisers are my “trigger” but I digress.

That said IIRC they did use live aircraft during several scenes and apparently the pilots were told to do a close pass. They did a CLOSE pass and apparently scared the shit out of everybody. With people yelling TOOO CLOSSSSE!!! Smile

I liked the Midway remake. Not as much as the original but I liked the casting and yeah the CGI was heavy handed at times and it tried to stuff too much of the pacific war in 2 hours but overall I didn’t hate it.

I like Tom Hanks in these types of Roles so I will probably enjoy this.

Greyhound is actually not too bad - worth a watch. Nothing like that abomination in the eyes of God and man, Pearl Harbour.
The CGI isn't bad actually.
Nautical aficionados and students of the Battle of the Atlantic and U-Boat/convoy escort will notice some silly stuff, but nothing too ghastly. The comments by posters above are correct, but it was still an enjoyable movie.
