Stayed up til 1:30 watching it last night. It was good, but not great, imo. I don't know, it's a very well-told story but lacks a little punch.

Pacino was fantastic... definitely the star of the show for me. Deniro is a mutt, to use one of his own terms. I typically still like him in his roles but he didn't seem to come off for me as well as Pesci and defniitely not as well as Pacino.

I love Scorsese and love all of the elements of his signature style. That part was all good. And I don't mind that his stories take a while to flesh out usually.

<spoiler>

But I thought the built-up tension in Deniro's brain could have used more screen time and some other stuff less. It seemed too easy for Frank to do Jimmy that way, after all of their time together.

I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

I surprise myself agreeing as I've always found Pacino hard to take. He came close to overdoing things a couple times as only Pacino can overdo things. He kept just enough of a lid on it.

On top of that Nicholson's Hoffa was physically more in line, Pacino's wide eyes weren't Hoffa. But Pacino was so damned involved in every situation, he was almost impossible not to watch. That's a good thing here. He mostly handled himself with elegance and wonderful restraint. I'll see a different man now when watching his previous work.

I found it interesting that in the post-show interview among Scorsese and the Big Three, Pacino was the most involved, interested and engaging. And in the Scorsese world, he was the odd man odd. Too bad he's so late to that party.

Pesci was a revelation and would have been the man without Pacino's performance. In a lesser role, Ray Romano was great too! And, TBH, DeNiro was excellent but I saw nothing particularly new there. In a movie that kind of turns the genre and the actors upside down, DeNiro left something on the table.

Way too long and predictable. Gratuitous violence and vulgarity. But then I guess I'm just too uneducated to fully appreciate the acting and directing skills of "Bobby" and "Marty."

I heard someone describe DeNiro's character as "the Forrest Gump of gangsters", the movie seems to want to insert him into nearly every significant event in the 60's and 70's Big Grin

Keep in mind that the movie is based on the book which is based on his confessions. If he said he was involved all the movie did was pass that information on.

Lots of mixed reviews on this movie.

I have spent so much time thinking about whether or not I am going to watch it, at this point, I should have just watched it.

Tried to watch it. Got halfway through and watched hockey instead.

Great actors, A+, but there comes a point where even the best make-up artist reaches the inherent limitations with the actor. They are just too old to be convincing as their younger selves. Their elderly locomotion and speech patterns make them look and sound comical.

Go to 20 minutes in. Acting going the way of the dinosaur. Some great comments about the Irishman.

I watched it in one sitting tonight. It was okay but not great. I doubt I will watch it again. If there were a choice of Goodfellas or the Irishman, I would watch Goodfellas for the 6th or 7th time over the Irishman. With DeNiros politics and big mouth, I have a hard time watching him lately. I thought the movie should have been titled Hoffa. One thing of interest to me was I was a member of the Teamsters 107 when it got broken up by the Feds. I also thought the movie made Hoffa look like a better person than he actually was.

Wow...I thought it was amazing. Did a superb job of conveying the moral depravity of these mobsters. It was utterly appalling that Frank was able to whack Jimmy...but, that's who these people are.

Why? These "people" are psychopaths. Look what they did to the Spilotro bros. Friends made them dig their own graves and then beat them to death with baseball bats. "Friends". I've dealt with these mobsters over the years. I've never seen anyone as capable of going into a complete rage in a micro second like these "people".

Wife and I thought this as the one last movie for the modern day mob actors (and director).

It was good but to be honest, are there any younger actors who could've done a better job?

1. Goodfellas
2. Casino
3 (maybe) The Irishman

I finished it. A long road to nowhere. The length didn't bother me, I didn't even notice it. Other than it was a pretty flat story arc, even if it had been normal length.

IMO it was good, not great. Pacino was the best, though just Pacino being Pacino with a Hoffa hair cut. DeNiro was alright and Pesci was just there. Anyone could have played the role. The biggest stretch and the hardest part was watching old guys, older guys and really old guys. Kind of like the opposite of watching a kids play, where you have to pretend you don't notice it's a kid playing an adult.

Saw it in one sitting, one pee break, and one drink refill break.

Thought Pesci was the best, DeNiro hemmed and hawed his way through the film, Pacino didn't over-act but, he remained Pacino. I get it, Hoffa was a character and would dominate the air so, Pacino was well cast.

I'll watch it again, Scorsese I enjoy his films.
