It’s on Netflix, I’m going to watch it tonight. Anybody else saw it yet?

Just started it, and thought I'd check in to the hive, figured somebody else would too. Really high hopes, fingers crossed!

The book (I hear you paint houses) was good. I am going to watch the movie this weekend.

Oh, Christ. Another variation on the Italian Mafia movie. Didn't they do one about Jewish mobs, as well?

I guess if it makes money, it's alright.

This is about Jimmy Hoffa. Pacino is Hoffa....I'm 2 hours in, a fantastic film.

Started this evening, will finish on the weekend. And, like most Scorsese movies easy to rewatch, I'll be doing that for sure.

Some thoughts about DeNiro, bear with me please. I find it hard to see past conspicuous jackasses, even playing a role. Not all of the loudmouths but many, for me they break the fourth wall just being on screen.

Well, DeNiro is an idiot and he says idiotic things. He has no insights or nuance. His political pronouncements sound like opportunistic piling on. You just can't take him seriously.

His level of Trump-hatred is off the charts, so much so one has to wonder how did it get there. FWIW Nick Dipaolo made a passing reference to this recently on his pod cast. ND says the bad blood goes back a long time and involved -- hold on to your hat -- a woman. ND claims this is common knowledge in NYC, I dunno. But there is something there and it seems too deep to just be politics.

I hope this isn't deleted, going political in a non-political thread. I'm offering a viewpoint of DeNiro that may help some of his haters enjoy what seems to be an absolute must-see movie.

I agree with you 100%, for what it is worth. In 2019 it is almost impossible to talk about Dinero doing a serious movie, discussing his acting, without at least addressing the white elephant in the room which is his hatred of all things Trump.

Personally I don’t care, I’ve said along time ago that unless I want to watch only entertainment with Ted Nugent, Tom Selleck, and a few select others, I’d have to pull myself away from my hatred of their politics.

You do make a good point about Dinero in the film, it took me about a half an hour to stop seeing him at the podium of some fancy dinner ranting away.

As far as the movie goes, it is so good! It seems like Dinero always plays the same type of role, and Al Pacino is just… we’ll Al Pacino. I really enjoyed Pesci‘s performance,So much more subdued than you are used to seeing with one of his characters. Ray Romano was a nice touch as well.

The beginning of the Kennedy stuff and talking about the Democrat voter fraud made me laugh out loud, and the Rickles bit was funny too.

Thanks, Ronin1069. To clarify, it's DeNiro who has made things political, I think it's something else. He's the least effective, most laughable Trump critic and, as such, I say keep yapping. His reality struck me as I watched the trailer for "The Irishman" and I can now see past his public buffoonery. Looking forward to finishing this film will get me through another dysfunctional Thanksgiving at the in-laws.

Just a thought on DeNiro..if you haven’t seen another excellent movie, Joker, the fate of his character didn’t hurt my feelings a whole lot. Phoenix shooting him in the head so he would shut up seemed to hit on a few levels

I watched this because Martin Scorsese directed it and he didn't disappoint. Didn't really know who was in it as I don't like to look up films before I see them, as much as possible - and it's doable. Excellent back up cast; Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale (The Station Agent), and Welker White (young mule in Goodfellas). Though the c.g.i. slow motion blood spurt was lazy, on the whole it was a classic Scorsese tale and I give it 9/10.

Started watching last night but didn't realize how long that sucker is. Had to bail on it at about 11:30 as I was getting tired and started missing a lot of the dialog. Got about 50 minutes to go which I won't be able to watch until Friday evening. Pretty good so far. I was around and out of the teen aged fog during the Hoffa antics but this adds a whole new prospective to the story. I'm assuming it's at least a little bit factual with a good dose of literary license.

I’ll give it a watch. I watched “Hoffa” again this summer, so it’ll be interesting to compare and contrast. The hit scene in that one always struck me as very unlikely, too Hollywood. The account of the guy who claimed to have been the one to pull the trigger strikes me as much more plausible, so I’m curious to see how they handle it in this film.

I also agree with you, Ripley. All I’m gonna say on it.

Mrs Pulicords and I watched it yesterday on Netflix and thought it was great. Al Pachino's Jimmy Hoffa was outstanding. DeNiro is a douchebag in real life, but his acting on this production was spot-on excellent, especially at the end. It's a 3 hour plus watch, but worth every second. The characters are well portrayed and it's nice seeing that Joe Pesci can provide a nuanced performance that's very much at odds over his "crazy gangster" personas from projects like "Goodfellas" and "Casino."

Consider me the "other voice."

I stopped watching after 30 minutes (29:58, to be exact!).

Don't get me wrong: I like Goodfellas and have watched it a number of times. I thought I was watching "Goodfellas: The Seniors Edition." There's no mistaking it's Scorsese and his "stable" of actors, but thirty years after the original. This time, De Niro is "Henry Hill," but now improbably cast as an Italian-speaking Irishman, named Frank Sheeran.

Scorsese does his tried-and-true film work. There are the baptisms, the cooking scenes, the voice-overs, the period automobiles, settings and clothing -- all of those are lovingly and painstakingly present. The actors, thirty years older (except through the marvel of CGI in the throwback scenes) are less animated and profane, but Scorsese manages to toss in his gory scenes of violence often enough to remind us that we're watching a gangster movie.

My bottom line is that it's all-too formulaic. Yes, I'll probably watch the whole thing to the end, but that's almost because there's a dearth of quality programming these days. Formulaic Scorsese is better than many other options.

I look forward to this aspect, specifically. I like his crazy gangster persona, but one of his most enjoyable roles for me was in "A Bronx Tale." He did't get a ton of screen time, but I feel like he added quite a bit to the film as a soft-spoken elder gangster.

I will say I sit here underwhelmed after watching it. There is a chance I am just not cerebral enough for the content. Guess I'll figure it out during the sequel.

I’m done with anything DeNiro

Halfway through and the word that comes to mind is lifeless. Everyone seems to be just taking care of business with no real hopes, dreams or joy in their lives. Yeah sure, you can CGI some age on and off but everyone moves like an old person and no one is looking to a real future. I'm not sure who this film is targeting. "Ancient" history and folks at the end of the road won't draw.

I started off excited, now I kinda sad and not sure how this film will get out of the hole it's digging.
