I assume that you mean barrel wear, as in muzzle and throat erosion.

There are specialized gages that are used to measure wear in thousandths of an inch. Here's a link:

http://www.scott-duff.com/ShooterAcc.htm

An improvised way to gauge wear at the muzzle is to insert a round of M2 ball ammo into the muzzle. The deeper the bullet fits into the muzzle, the higher the wear value. It's not an exact measurement, but it can give you a good guesstimate of muzzle wear.

If your question was actually referring to barrel corrosion, the ideal tool is to use a borescope, but a bright light source and your eye will do just fine.

Corrosion in the bore may have various appearances ranging from a light 'frosted' appearance, visible heavy pitting or a dark color.

However, there's no guarantee that what you see in the bore is actually a problem. For example: a bore that has a dark color and/or looks like a sewer pipe may just be in need of a good cleaning. A little elbow grease can do wonders.

Also, the visible appearance of the bore is not an indicator of how well the rifle will shoot.

The stock should also have a imprint / stamp that can be attributed to a date. Example: mine is VERY faint be reads SA over GAW. This would be the correct dated stock for my receiver manufacture date.

However bear in mind, if the stock was on a rifle during arsenal rebuild, the stock was sanded and the cartouches mentioned above will be gone in most cases. For example, my M1 originally built in 1944 has a 1946 barrel. The crossed cannons and inspector cartouches were sanded off during rebuild after the war; however there is a P stamp and an RIA on the stock from when it was rebuilt at Rock Island Arsenal and proofed. So yes, as far as originality goes, certain cartouches should exist. But many USGI stocks no longer have them

Here is mine, USGI stock:

So after taking it apart, and inspecting it I am happy to say that everything is as it should be. The barrel is in amazing condition and original. This is not a CMP rifle but was the current owners fathers.

I am very excited to finish paying it off and show you !!

thanks Big Grin

Yes, thank you. I should have clarified that... In my case it is a circle P marked stock, but it seems they did not completely sand out the cartouche, its a ghost image.

By the way, absolutely beautiful condition / color on that wood.

Thanks. I spent a lot of time on it. When I first got the thing, the poor stock looked like King Kong had it lodged in his colon for 50 years

I just got the cmp special grade. That is $995. Looks like a new garand, most of it is. It said on there web site it would take at least 180 days. Mine showed up in less than 2 months. You need to check them out, I don't see how you could good wrong. it is so pretty I hate to shoot it, but I am.

Remember: If you can't prove it, it didn't happen

The nice thing about M1 thumb is that you are unlikely to do it twice.

I've seen real POS going for $900+ here in town. Whats the deal the M1 pricing, over the last few years they have realy jumped. I gave $650 for my M1, they only problem is that the lower stock is birch and not walnut. I need to get a new stock kit for it, beside that is shoots great.

Then it was probably a DCM rifle, the predecessor organization to the CMP.
Unless he is claiming it is a "Veteran bring back." If it was and he could prove it the price would be 10X. Buy the rifle, not the story.
