I've satisfied my Pistol cravings for the moment (still looking for a nice P2000). But, I've been bouncing around the idea of a DMR type rifle for about 2 years now.

1. Heavy Barreled Flat Top AR (thinking Noveske), nice trigger, 1:7 Twist, and a nice piece of glass on top.

2. LRB M25 Action, McMillan Fiberglass, nice trigger, medium weight barrel, and a nice piece of glass.

I realize it's 308 vs 223, and in the end 308 would be able to reach out much further to tickle something. I also realize it's two completely different styles of rifle.

But if it were you, which would you pick and why? (Cost is not a real concern as they are both pretty high dollar investments)

I was debating a similar type of purchase (Noveske AR15 v. AR10 platform) when I came across a Noveske 6.8SPC VIS Recce rifle. Noveske makes a very fine rifle and their 6.8SPC barrels are incredibly accurate. Added a Geissele SSA trigger and topped it off with a NF 2.5-10x32mm...couldn't be happier.

Sorry if this only throws another wrench in the works.

Ammo and magazines is available for the 6.8spc through Cabela's and Sportsman Guide as well as Midway.

It is very expensive and honestly in my opinion not worth it, I plan on building one because I just want to have one. For the build you are doing I would buy or build a AR10.

I would take the LRB. I have two Springfield M1As and love the platform. I will certainly add an LRB at some point. It is simple and robust. My M1A NM is very accurate, but of course it is glass bedded. The downside is that scoping an M14-clone/variant is always a compromise unless you have a pretty wild stock. Even with the M25, the scope sits pretty high above the bore due to the need for ejection clearance. This gives a somewhat awkward cheek weld. You do get used to it, but it is not ideal.

It really comes down to what you want to do with it. I won't get into the .308 vs. .223 debate, but for me .308 is where it is at. I do not anticipate needing to hump 1000 rds through the woods.

The Noveskes I've handled are fine rifles. I just am tired of direct impingement however. They work fine but just seem like more work. The AR platform can be made very accurate, for sure. If the goal is a benchrest gun, in my experience the AR will be quite a bit more accurate than the LRB unless you spend a lot of money to tune the LRB.

I'm rambling so I will stop. The bottom line is that you need to decide the purpose/application for the rifle and go from there. Either choice is a good one for the right application.

I'd do the LRB. I've thought about the M-25 put recently have wondered if this would work better.

Perhaps Arcwelder could give us some insight.

Two totally different roles IMO.

But what ranges do you want to shoot at?

223 really starts dropping off accuracy wise 500-600 yards

While semi-auto 308s tend to drop off 800-1000 yards (depending on shooter skill).

For the 223 I would look at White Oak, and get a 1:8" barrel.

6.8SPC sucks hardcore for longer shots as the BC/velocity are rather poor. Look into the 6.5 Grendal if you really want to reach out and touch something without having a ton of recoil, etc.

I think the 6.8 makes perfect sense in your situation. I have been doing some thinking about this for a while as well. I have done some reconfiguring of my rifles and have decided on two different set up's. One in .223 and one in 6.8. Both Noveske. A 20" spr w/vis in .223 and the other a Recon vis in 6.8.
Another rifle to consider might be the LWRC 18" DMR in either caliber. Let us know what you decide.

Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

FAL's are fine rifles, that was in the consideration as well. But at the moment I'm feeling the draw toward the M1/M14 pattern of rifle.

My Eyes are still young enough and without the need for corrective lenses so far. I'm thinking of going with a "Semi-target grade" M14 built up from LRB in a McMillan Stock. Med-heavy barrel, good sights, good trigger, good internals, and bedded.

Always have been a firm believer in the capacity to not only use but become proficient with Irons.
