Now if they would be smarten up and offer all of them with the old Sig 55* series furniture I might change my mind.

After buying my first one almost 4 years ago I shoot my 556's almost exclusivly now ... AR's rarely see the light of day.

If you really want something you'll find a way ...
... if you don't you'll find an excuse.

I have one. I love it, for the most part... The gas system is great, and felt recoil is, well, not felt. It could not be more reliable. Unfortunately, I got one of the "humped" models..... This means it won't shoot under 4 inch groups at 100 yards, not matter what brand/weight ammo I use, and believe me, I've tried them all. My S&W M&P 15T will shoot 2 inch groups all day long, with standard M193 ball 5.56. So when I want an accurate rifle, I take my 15T. Sadly, SIG denies they have a problem with some of their 556s. Trust me, they do.

Better read this before you buy a SIG 556:

Depending on what sights you get (the SIG red dot is a joke) you may have to replace the optics or the iron sights.

+1

Did exactly the same. Started by replacing the fishgill handguards. Next was a Magpul CTR stock. Replaced teh front sight with a folding Sampson sight and a spare ARMS #40LP BUIS. Changed the rifle entirely. Also added an Aurora front pin. Only thing I would do different now is go Aurora for the front and rear sights instead of what I chose.

great carbine.

Love mine. My gun log tells me I shoot it more than any other 5.56/223 gun I have, and I have more rounds through it than several other 5.56/223 rifles combined. (round count 2920 documented). I have not cleaned it since...I can't remember, and only twice...I'd say it has at least 1200 rounds through it since last cleaning.

Very early two-tone (under 1200 SN).

I chhanged out the fore end with a 551 variant, put in a push pin for disassembly, changed muzzle devices three or four times, am getting ready to change out the gen2 pistol grip (which was a free upgrade from the gen 1 PG from SIG). I just changed the factory slider (which was very comfy with good storage but ugly) for MOE CTR. I have Samson and MI flip sights, as mine had no BUIS.

Definitely heavy but don't notice it when shooting. Very accurate with any weight of ammo from 55gr up. Minimal recoil--so much so, a muzzle brake had no noticeable impact on recoil dynamics (for me).

Sent back to SIG four times, three times for rail issues, once for failure to hold open the bolt on empty; SIG replaced the bolt head on it and sent me two clip together plastic mags for my time (which everyone hates but have caused me no problems to date).

Gas system is complex and confusing and I simply just don't take it apart or turn it. I still don't know if I have it together right or if it's on normal setting, but it works so I leave it alone. I think the new ones have an arrow or something on the adjuster by the muzzle.

I only wish it had the popsicle BUIS. I'm actually thinking of selling this one and buying a newer one with the built in popsicle BUIS. My main optic is a 4x ACOG.

Great gun overall, one of my favorites and also anybody elese who has shot it. Highly recommended by me!

You had better service the gas system or one day you will decide to or have to and have a heck of a time getting it apart. I didn't clean it for about 200 rounds and it was tough getting the gas plug to detach from the op rod. It really caked up. I was shooting handloads not the dirty Russian brands. I learned how to take it apart when it was clean and it really isn't that difficult if you practice it a few times.
But your right the entire takedown is a PIA compared to the AR platform. It is one of the things in the 556 I'm not happy with.

+1 on the 551 handguards. Makes a big difference in the feel and appearance of the rifle.

Realtor, I wouldn't do that. Seriously, yours is one with a majority of Swiss internals. You should hang on to it.

I grabbed one, mainly cause it was a SIG. I put on a Magpul stock, tossed the multi railed thing in front and got a real forearm. Put on a nice rear sight, now I like it, except for one thing, the upper/lower did not fit tightly till I put in a piece of duct tape to tighten it up a bit. It shoots quite well for what it is (a carbine), but it is heavy, and I somehow get to walk in the woods a lot(probably has to do with my tracking dog), and it can get tiresome, and it cuts a couple of mags from my load.
