Today I ordered a 556 rifle . I did a lot of reserch looking at all kinds of AR's AK type and many other types of auto loading rifles .I already have a few AR's and an AK and wanted something differnt . I pretty much just want to know how thouse of you that have them like them . Thanks Mike

Assume you mean the Sig and not just a generic rilfe in 5.56.

I love mine. Its very accurate and the function is flawless with all types of ammo I've tried.

I've enjoyed mine. I can't wait to get her back onto the range soon.

I played with one in the local fun store and it felt fake and plasticky. The folding stock and the collapsing part also felt finicky and fake. Glad I chose the XCR over the 556.

Now if they would be smarten up and offer all of them with the old Sig 55* series furniture I might change my mind.

i have a 556 SWAT rifle and pistol but haven't had the chance to fire them yet. i'm confident they will perform as designed and i can say that mine really appear to be well built with excellent fit & finish. the only downside to the 556 in my opinion is the weight. the 556 is heavier than any other 556 rifle i own and a lot of that weight is towards the front. the buis sites on some of the early models were a complete joke and totally worthless as was the heavy plastic forearm. the classic and SWAT models seem to have morphed into what sig fans were looking for as opposed to the original 556 configuration. if you ordered one of the new models i think you'll be 100% satisfied since sig has cleared up the flaws in the early rifles.

I like mine fine, reliable so far, very accurate with 77 grain ammo in particular.

Too front heavy, so soon it will get the "classic" handguard.

rear sight sucketh, so it must one day be replaced.

Buy the gun, replace:
handguards, stock, folding mechanism, front sight, rear sight, front receiver screws, and charging handle.

Depending on your models serial number you may need to send it back to Sig to have them fix the rail or the dreaded "hump" on the receiver. I got lucky and got a problem free one.

When I got mine, one of the fairly early ones (S/N just over 10000) I almost sold it due to the crappy furniture. I've since invested around $500 into replacing all the places that Sig decided to cut corners. Now, I don't think I'll ever sell it. It's incredibly reliable and accurate. Muzzle rise is pretty much non existent.

Would I buy the gun again knowing what I'd have to do to make it a great gun? probably not. For the flat $1300 that they're going for, there are better guns out there. However, A Sig with all the previously mentioned stuff replaced is a great rifle. It's just a pain that you have to pay extra for what most companies put on their rifle from the start.

Why the XCR?

I purchased the collapsible stock version this year and I really enjoy the rifle. Fit, form, and function all work well for me. A little over 500 rounds fired, no problems with quality in materials or manufacturing. The gas piston system runs smooth, clean, and cool. As accurate as I can be at a 100 yard range.

It is a little heavier up front than other rifles but not an issue for me. The weight reduces muzzle flip and it's easily compensated with a quality sling. I like the front sight. The rear flip up; it is what it is, a back up. I'm attaching an Aimpoint Comp4M soon.

I would recommend replacing the pivot pin right away. It would have saved me from making an "idiot" mark from a slip of the screw driver.

I have the SWAT model, a little bit front heavy, about 400 rounds down the pipe and zero malfunction. 2" groupings at 100 yards with scope.

I always thought the Sig 556 was pretty fugly. If they were a lot cheaper I might be willing to give em a try, but not at the cost of an m1a. Also I thought they felt kinda cheap, the furniture always felt like I could just rip it apart, that isn't good.

I've got one of the early ones,with a lot of Swiss parts and a collapsible stock.I bought it used,with a Samson quad rail on it.I really like this rifle,and I have rather a lot of rifles.After firing around 250 rounds of Wolf ammo,I took it apart to clean it.And it didn't need cleaning.Sweet.With a military grade red dot scope,she will put 90 rounds in the bull at 50 yards,rapid fire.

For what you want it for I think it will serve you well. I already owned AKs and ARs before I bought my two 556s so as long as you have the basics covered (AK/AR) it's nice to have something different in the tool box. When you get your 556 inspect the shit out of it right out of the box. Sig has had embarrassing Q&C over the last few years especially with the 556 line.

I'm in the positive camp with my 556 Classic. I bought it as a "hobby gun", as that is truly what it is to me. Something fun to go shoot and so far it's been great. It's true that it's front heavy, and some have had problems with the "hump" issue mentioned earlier in the thread (I have not - luckily I suppose).

Because this is a fun guy for me, and I already knew it was on the heavy side I actually went the other way than is common and made it heavier. I swapped out the "classic" style handgaurd for a Troy battle rail (absolute top notch quality) and Troy front and rear sights. Works great, never a hiccup on various makes and wieghts of ammo, low recoil, accurate....

I got an early one and its been flawless (appox 2000 rounds). I do find it to be a bit front heavy (especially since I put a Harris bipod on it) but you get used to it. I always get people looking at it at the range.

I've got two of them and they are great!

If you don't have the classic replace your hanguards with the 551 handguards and the butt stock with the Magpul CTR. You love the feel of the gun. Inspect the gun carefully for fit and finish and make sure the rail isn't canted. As previously noted SIG 556 have had many QC problem. I was also one of the lucky ones. Depending on what sights you get (the SIG red dot is a joke) you may have to replace the optics or the iron sights.

Why the XCR?

Something different. Wanted a folding stock, gas piston rifle. Everything Sig offered looked cheap and plastic. So I ordered an XCR. I also cannot stand Ar15's anymore. Having owned my fair share of them and all that mess they are just dreadfully boring.

My Sig 556 is fantastic! Not a single issue at all. Eats anything, without fail and is dead on.
