I can appreciate talent and finesse. But if a shooter tries to finesse their way into a shot at around a mile, the guy with the range finder is going to win
...

It is just the nature of the beast.

Reloading skills at the under 10 FPS SD and 30 FPS ES level; rock-solid fast position building; wind-reading to within 2 MPH (all assuming a capable rifle and shooter).

I believe you are confusing progress with advancement. One is forward movement in any direction and the other is movement towards your destination.

New and better tripods and technique for shooting off of them seems to be increasingly important as well.
