I'm curious because they use a small rifle primer.

Will I see any firing pin issues or blown primers?

I'm really wanting to try some.

Guessing you have a large firing pin? Could have a problem piercing primers with a large pin, damage your trigger.....

That's what I'm afraid of. My Hornady brass is on it's second loading. I'll see how it holds up I guess.

That's a great rifle, tremendous loads, and good shooting. So...when will Hornady start selling factory Dasher ammo?

Yesterday helped a friend set up his range. He has about 60 pieces of steel, fun stuff! Max distance of the range 2650yds! Having access to this range, leaning hard toward putting together a ELR rig this fall, a 338LM Improved?

After we set up a bunch of steel, ran a few rounds through Dasher barrel #4 from 300-850. Confirm velocity... Tracked Magneto velocity perfectly, holding vertical very well.

3 shots at 850. Aim small point between the target hanger and the black patch, gusty wind L-R. Couldn't track, hold vertical any better. Still grinning!

Cheese and rice. You mean that barrel can only maintain .15 MOA vertical at 850 yards? It's a tomato stake, and not a very good one at that. Ask jelrod for a refund, if that's all the better gun plumbing he can do with that mouse fart chambering.

You need to step up to a manly rifle. I'm thinking .458 Win Mag, 16" pencil-profile barrel, 6-7 pounds total weight, steel butt plate, iron sights, shooting off-hand. Trust me, it will wonders for your precision steel game.

Or maybe a 12 gauge pump... Hear Berger is coming out with slugs, BC of .001.

I'll get you out to this range before Wyoming. Wind is very challenging there, terrain.... There's three shooting positions, max 950, max 2050, max 2650. Power lines running through the property dictate the positions. Slim we'll hit one, not taking the chance. 2050/2650 distances have very large natural berms. We're thinking on the 2050 targets at 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, the magical mile and 2050. Not sure on target sizes yet? Maybe park a UPS delivery truck broadside at 2050!

Skipping off one of those power lines may be just what the dasher needs to make it to 2650!

Nice shooting offgrid. Looks like #s 4 and 5 are doing well. That dasher/Chanlynn combo is great too.

Look forward to it! And having my butt kicked at distance.

I staked a 1300 yard target location at our ranch last weekend, just need to pound a fence post to hold my 24" square steel target. I won't be able to use this lane all the time, since I must be watchful of the "burgers on the hoof" in a nearby pasture. This effectively gives me target options of 700 to 1300 yards in roughly 100 yard increments, however I don't currently have enough steel to have all distance options available at any one given moment.

Just curious -- when do your tables show the Dasher bullet's going subsonic at "normal" Colorado elevations?

Shot my favorite LR steel match yesterday in Raton. It was a wind beat down, about the toughest wind I've shot in there. Big swings while shooting a stage, huge swings from shooter to shooter. This type of wind, luck plays a large part when we're shooting. One shooter hold a somewhat steady value, next shooter needed to hold 7mph left/7mph right over a 6 shot string in a couple minutes. A couple stages I was fortunate, next shooter not so much...glad I'm not shooting now, good luck with that! The terrain makes it very difficult to read the wind. Mirage screaming R-L, dust splash L-R or moving straight up. Trees swaying hard at the shooting position, grass hardly moving at the target. 63 shooters, lots of low scores. Winner 50/60. I scratched my way to a 6th place tie 47/60. Alpine nipped me by one 47/60. Sure it's fun to score in the mid/high 50's, but I enjoy shooting in those very challenging winds, I'll be a better shooter because of it. And very much enjoy the challenge of one shot hit or miss in those conditions. Fun stuff!

Buddy and I are leaning towards having 338LM Imp's built. 338LM case shoulder blown out to 40 degrees, less taper on the case body. Reached out to someone shooting the caliber, he was kind enough to send a sized dummy round loaded with a Berger 300 Hybrid, three fired cases and a reamer print.

Should easily get the Berger 300 Hybrid zipping along at 3000fps. That ought to reach out there a ways!

338LM Imp next to a Dasher round. Yikes, that's a big case!

jlemmy,

solids shot very poor in my buddies SA 7saum. He shot his normal load right after trying the solids, shot like poop. Tremendous amount of metal in his barrel. He got everything out of his barrel, bug holed again. Seeing that and how poorly the G9's shot in a 6BR, pass!

Silly easy Dasher!

A friend gave me a handful of the new Dtac 115's with the funky rebated boat-tail asked me to run a few through my Dasher, OK!

Loaded 5 each 32.4, 32.7, 33 Varget. Jumped .010. Free-bore is set up for the much shorter 105 Hybrids, shoving the Dtac's way in the case... Shot one of each, 33 had a very slight stiff bolt lift, didn't shoot those. 32.7 not bad! Loaded another 5 of the 32.7, chrono'd at 2923, SD 3, ES 8. Shooting a match tomorrow if the weather cooperates, afterwards I'll put some rounds of the 32.7 load on paper at distance, hopefully at 1050yds if I can squeeze in on the F-Class range.

I didn't get very good accuracy with the solids but when I switched back to the Berger's the accuracy returned. I have a barrel out right now being setup for the solids. Will have a muuuuch shorter throat. Will resume testing and see how it goes. Worse case I send the barrel back to the smith and have the throat recut for the Berger.

Happiness is having to climb in your car to change your target.

jlemmy, look forward seeing how the solids work out in a chamber set up for them.

My buddy (7saum guy) with the 2600yd range ordered a 338LM Imp reamer, throater, go gauge this week. Reamer no freebore... He's going to have jelrod1 throat the chamber for the 300 Hybrids. I'm sitting back and seeing how his gun shoots... as well as yours. Hard not to look at the .338 255 solids at 3150 and not drool!

He's building it on a single shot Barnard PL action, bought it on sale for $970 at Whiddens. I handled it, very nice action, two stage trigger is outstanding.

AAR - Idaho Shamrock Shootout (NRL), Vale Oregon.

Last weekend I traveled to Vale, OR for the inaugural National Rifle League match. Kicking off the season was the Idaho Shamrock Shootout. Furthest match I've ever traveled for, almost a 1000-mile drive each way for me.

The match was held at the Snake River Sportsmans Club, outside of Vale, Oregon. The range there is a square range, and spreadout throughout a large bowl surrounded by hills and sandstone cliffs. That location in itself is surrounded by BLM land I'm told.

The match format was 10-stages each day. Each stage you would engage multiple targets with 10-rounds, with a 120-second time limit. There was one stage that had a 90-second time limit.

First day we shot off of a cliff/ridge line overlooking the range, day two we shot at the same target array, but from the base of the cliff/ridge line. A couple of the stages were the same between the two days, with most only having the same target arrays the same, but with a different stage format. Athough the targets were slightly closer (50 - 100-yards)the second day, the difficulty of the stages and shooting positions were made more challenging.

Both days the weather kept the sky gray and overcast, with an off and on again drizzle. I think I remember the sun only peaking out from behind the clouds once. Temperatures ranged from mid 40's to mid 60's both days. Wind was a varying combination of dead calm to around 12-mph, but averaged around 5-mph or less. Of course the wind decided to change on me while I was shooting the long distance targets.

Because of the sandy soil and wet weather conditions, it was very difficult to spot misses because of the lack of splash in the soil, except on the high angle shots at closer targets. Also difficult to see impacts on steel at times because of the flat light conditions and mist in the air.

There were 100 shooters registered for the match, but I beleive only 97 or 98 shooters showed.

On Friday before the match, Shooter sign in took place. There was the opertunity to sight in /zero your rifle, engage a few targets out to 800-yards, and take the B&T (Atlas Bipod / Accushot Monopod) One-shot challenge. That consisted of an Ace of Spades target card at 110-yards. Of course I blew my one shot by not zeroing my elevation turret after shooting the targets out on the range.

There was also a Caracal sponsored side match, where you had 10-rounds (9mm) to engage five steel plates at 15 to 20-yards. Fastest shooter to hit all five plates (at least once) won the pistol.

AAR - Continued.

Day one - My Squad started on Stage 4 - Mindblower. Shooter starts standing port arms, magazine in, bolt back. At the beep, Shooter opens the passenger door to a truck and engages two targets, two shoots each through the open window of the open door with front of the rifle resting on the window sill. You could use any support in the rear (we as a Squad shared a tripod with a bag resting on top of it.). After the first two targets were engaged, Shooter climbs into the cab and engages the remaining three targets, two shots each through the missing windshield area of the truck. My plan was to climb onto the hood and shoot it prone, but I missed part-two of the stage brief where the RO said you had to stay on or behind the dash, no part of your body could be on or over the hood. I managed to score five hits out of ten possible. Targets 1 - 4 at 530-yards, target 5 at 556-yards.

Stage 5 - TYL Rack, shoot five targets large to small, small to large one shot each. Smallest target is 2" wide, and my reticle covers most of it. I hit it once. Score eight out of ten. targets at 407-yards.

Stage 6 - Cliffs Roofies. Mock roof, engage two targets alternating between the two in a prone position, five rounds, then repeat in a kneeling position.

Stage 7 - Metalocalypse. A barricade made from square tubular steel, with ports in weird trapizodial shapes. Have to engage one target, two shoots from each unique opening. 490-yards. First day I get one hit out of ten, second day they turn the barricade around. I get three hits out of ten, but only score two hits because my last shot occured as the buzzer sounds. I suck at this stage both days.

Stage 8 - Strawbreaker. Large hay bails stacked up in an uneven and unlevel configuration. Five firing positions, two rounds each position, engage two targets one shot each position. This is were I discover my ultra smooth feeding Magpul PMAG AC magazines aren't so smooth, and the bolt hits and stops at the back of the feedlips when there is pressire on the mag from the bag under the forearm, or while resting the mag on the hay bail. I score three hits, and time-out when getting on the fourth position. Targets at 630, and 622-yards.

Stage 9 - 3rd Rock from the Cliff. Three positions off of a rocky ledge. First position, engage target one with three rounds. Second position, engage target two with three rounds. Third position, engage target three with four rounds. I smoke this stage, with 7-seconds remaining. I ask the RO if I cleaned it, and he says NO. I pull my mag from my rifle and have one round remaining in it. Oh, I guess that's why I missed one. Targets, 343, 370, and 417-yards.

Stage 10 - The Long Ranger. Five targets, two rounds each. Wind goes from calm to a 5-mph R-L as I start shooting. Cannot see hits/misses. Only scored one hit. 893, 970, 1046, 1096, 1144-yards.

AAR - Continued.

Stage 1 - MGM Pop it Like It's Hot. Five pistol popper style reactive targets. High angle shots off of rock ledges. Engage targets near to far, position one. Then move to position two and engage targets far to near. Score six out of ten here. Targets at 316, 342, 406, 464, and 531-yards

Stage 2 - Cliff Rock Run. Three positions from over the edge of a cracked cliff wall. Three positions, one of three targets from each position. Three, three, and four round sequence. Have to stand on top of the cliff, port arms when the beep sounds, then climb down the cliff to the shooting positions. I extend my bipod legs all the way out, folded forward, and able to span the gap from the cliff to the first rock position, and shoot it prone. I then jump down to engage targets from the other rock positions, and timeout on the last position. Score three hits. Targets (66% IPSC) at 766, 830, and 799-yards.

Stage 3 - Swingers Party. Shooting through a hangman's noose (looped) around the front of your rifle, engage five targets, two rounds each. We as a Squad all share a tripod and use a leg to support the rifle just behind the loop. I score three hits. Targets at 208, 246, 305, 366, and 445-yards.
