Today I became the proud owner of Rem. 700 LTR in .308. I just need a scope for it. It is going to be a deer gun. I have been looking really hard at the Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 with the bullet drop reticle. Does any one have any experiance with this scope or any other reccomendations

I have the Nikon Monarch "tactical" 2.5-10X44 IR mildot on my LTR in .223.

I really like it. The glass is very clear, crisp with great light gathering / transmission. Seems durable and I have had no zeroing issues with it. Fit and finish on the Leupold units is a little better.

Make sure you pick up some good mounts and bases as well.

You also can't go wrong with anything from Leupold.

For a deer gun you are going to pack around I would go with a lightweight 3x9x38/40. Nikon makes a good one, IMO. I DO NOT like the Nikon BDC reticle, however. A standard Duplex for me. YMMV

nikon in your price range

the BDC reticle is pretty useful, the next scope I buy will have it

use leupold mounts/rings

I have a nikon buckmaster 3-9x50 and can hunt practically until dark

Can't go wrong with the Nikon Monarch...I have six of them and will be the only scopes I purchase from now on for my higher end guns...
I just put a 4x12x40 BDC on my pro hunter 25.06 barrel about ten minutes ago...Just finished up and bore sighted it...
Monarchs are great scopes for the money and IMHO are equal to or better than Leupold at about 60% of the cost!!!!I used to be a Leupold guy and I don't own any of them at present...Enjoy your scope, you won't be disappointed!!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Thanks,

Well I today I got my scope. I ended up getting the nikon monarch 2.5-10x42 with the nikoplex reticle. I thought really hard about getting the BDC reticle but the one thing that turned me off was having to have have the zoom on the highest settings for the lines to be accurate. I have access to hunt in several different kind of places open soy bean fields hardwood groves pine thickets as a result I could easily have 300yd or 20yd shots and I didn't want to have to make a close shot zoomed in all the way. Well hopefully I will get some meat in the freezer shortly don't worry if I do pics will follow and there will definately be some meal protection photos when the meat ends up on the grill or smoker.

The only scopes that are accurate throughout the magnification range are First Focal Plane optics. They tend to be more expensive and found mostly on European scopes, though not exclusively so.

There are a few good options for you. I would look into a scope with covered turrets. A Leupold Mark 2 would fit this bill nicely.

It's a VX-II with a covered turret so it doesn't get knocked around during hunting.

Dope the rifle at the range, keep a record of it, if it needs adjusting when you're taking a shot you can be much more accurate than a BDC reticle suited for one specific load (chances are it'll be off to your specific load). With turrets, you'll be much more precise.

The Vortex Viper may also be a nice scope to look into as well.

Skip the BDC, look into a covered turret.
