I suppose the longer you shoot, the greater the chance of something like this happening.

This morning I put a few mags through the m&p15-22. Had the gun a couple months, never had a problem. My brother came out with his skeeter, and a couple boxes of winchester superX he just bought at farm and fleet. Never shot the stuff before.

Got halfway thru a mag of this stuff, and then BANG!!!!!!!!! I've been shooting for 21 years, and NEVER heard a .22 sound like this before. I thought a damn 9mm went off by my ear. I dropped the mag and checked my breach - the case of the bullet was shredded, and halfway out of the chamber.

I was able to push it out with a barrel rod, and that's when I noticed my extractor assembly was completely gone! Blew the thing right off!

Well, we shoot in a grassy area, so needless to say I couldn't find the extractor.

My brother immediately emptied all of his mags with the winchester in them.

Got home and stripped the gun. I can't see any damage to the breach or bolt assembly. Barrel looks good.

I called S&W to get a new extractor, and I'm happy to report their CS was amazing, and they're sending me a pre-paid label to ship the entire gun back. After I explained what happened they said they wanted to go over the gun and make sure everything is alright. Now I call that service.

Pics to come of the casing - got 'em on the cell and the cable's at the office.

***UPDATE***
Got my rifle back from S&W today, and am quite pleased. Not only did they fix the extractor, they shipped it back with 2 25 rnd magazines! Now that's quality service! Took her out to the farm and ran a hundred rounds with no problems. Thanks S&W!

The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes....Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

That's nice of S&W. From what you've said, it seems more like Winchester's fault - I'd call them also.

Sounds a lot like an out of battery. It will wake you up for certain. Would like to see the pics of the case.

Glad you're not hurt. Had something similar happen to me when I was 15. It was an out of battery, ended up getting part of the extractor removed from my neck.

It does sound like it fired out of battery - the bolt not all the way closed.

That is probably not an ammo problem.

This.

I have seen this happen on 22 conversions for AR-15s of several different makes.

It wasn't the ammo.

Yes, I read about a similar incident on another forum. Hmmmmm, may be this is the achilles heel of the M&P15-22. Glad to hear that you're OK though. Like I said before.....ALL of the new .22 AR clone rifles are gonna have their issues.

Every .22 conversion for the AR-15 I use has done this except it never blew off the extractor.

I've had it happen with a Ciener 22lr conversion. Scary for sure, luckily no damage to me or the rifle.

I have to disagree about it not being the ammo. I compared the casing to 4 other brands I shot before this happened. The casing gets just a little wider toward the rim than the other brands. The other Winchester shells from the same box seem to be ok as well, so looks like a bad shell made it into the mix. Haven't gotten any response from Winchester yet on the matter.

Smith and Wesson has a long history of making things right. Glad they did for you too.

Same thing happened to my 15-22. S&W fixed it and two free magazines. Also, if the ejector gets a little out of position, a lot of FTEs occur, sometimes leading up to a OOB.

I was using Remington Golden Bullets at the time. Others on the saw forum also have problems with the Remington GBs.

You measured a casing that fired out of battery and you were surprised that it was larger than normal?
