I have a bushmaster flattop upper with gas block (no sights) and a Stag Arms complete lower coming in next week- I had planned on building one from parts kits, etc. but came across too good of a deal on both the upper and lower.

My first question is that the barrel does not have a flash hider/bird cage and the barrel is not threaded- what would you recommend- threading the barrel for flash hider or utilizing a pinned flash hider/birdcage.

Second question I would like to get a set of flip down sights for front and back- but do not want to spend a lot as I will mostly utilize a scope due to my failing vision. Any suggestions regarding economical sights and where to obtain them.

I can't help you with the sights too much but the Magul buis may work for you. However I'm not sure about mounting the Magpul on a gas block though. They are plastic and I don't know about the heat.

I believe there are clamp on flash hiders out there that aren't pinned or threaded. But if I couldn't find anything along those lines I would consider having the barrel threaded for one and not have it pinned (given you have the minimum 16" barrel length)

Order up a set of MAGPULs flip up rears. They are pretty affordable at under $60.

Even a pinned muzzle device need to be threaded first....THread then blind pinned for perm. attachment.

A Magpul rear MBUS costs about half of the Troy folding BUIS, however, you shouldn't mount a front MBUS to a gas block.

Get either the Midwest Industries or YHM gas-block front sight. Or consider one of the removeable 'fixed' triangle front sights that can come on and off with a thumbscrew. As JW1069 mentions, Magpul MBUS doesn't come in a gas-block height model (At least the last time I checked), and is made of plastic which can be affected by the heat in the block.

It sounds like you saved some cash on the rifle by buying an "optics ready" upper, which makes great sense if you want to put a magnified scope on there. Why throw away those savings by spending $150 on backup sights?

Thanks- the sights are for versatility as my son will also likely shoot at our local range where they have military style rifle shoots that have to be open sights.

I have found various BUIS used sights for front and back for less than $100.
