I am looking to add a light to my shotgun (Remington 870) for home defense. Any recommendations?

I looked at Surefire Forend replacements -- they are closing in on the price of the shotgun itself, which seems hard to justify on a hope-I-never-have-to-use basis.

What other (more cost-effective) mounts/light combos have you used or do you recommend? Or do I really need to bite the bullet and spend that kind of money just in case? The one thing I do NOT want to do is spend money and then find that the flashlight I attach couldn't stand up to the firing/recoil.

I hate to say it, but the only one I've ever seen that consistently works are the Surefire ones. They're pricey, but if you're going to be using this for defense, you probably don't want to skimp.

Yes, you do.

I just use the TLR-1 by Streamlight, partially because I took it off my 229R to put on the TLR-2 doing a LOT of night work.

I have the SureFire on my 870. It IS expensive and there MIGHT be cheaper alternatives that work. That being said, I have never once regretted the purchase and I enjoy the piece of mind I get from knowing that it WILL work.

I've never regretted buying quality, even when it hurts, but I have regretted not buying quality more times than I care to admit.

After a whole lot of research I went with the Lasermax light/laser combo with momentary activation switch (LMX1202COMBO). http://tradingpostsupply.com/ has these at an excellent price and I'm very pleased with it. Haven't had it very long so I can't attest to longevity, but again my research didn't reveal any credible issues in that regard, or overall quality for that matter.

Agreed

There are other mounting options, but I truely think you get what you pay for. Surefire has proven itself to be a reliable light.

I have one on my Benelli M1S90 and 1 on my Mossy 590A1.

I don't regret spending the money to put the Surefire forearm light on my 870. If something goes bump in the night that 870 with that light is what I grab. With my family in the house I want to make sure of what I'm aiming at. And yes I use it in conjunction with a small handheld light.

I just wish that the Surefire 11-87 forearm was more like all their other shotgun forearms.

It has always looked like an after thought, not as clean as the 870s.
