I've used the German #4 reticle on a number of rifles for many years, 9.3x57, 9.3x62, .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, 6.5x55 and AR-15's. That reticle is my favorite.

I already know what I'm going to do, which is run down a modern bolt in 8mm, because I've got spam cans of it and don't really want to keep banging on the K98 I have. So I think what will happen is whatever I can find in a modern production 8mm, with a German #4 on it. Probably also cut to 16". Now that I've done one, I'll cut rifles like I cut the lawn.

I'd say it's a shame more people don't. Considering comments I've gotten, online and off, about this lark of a "short" 30.06, I'd say people are much too prudish about what a bolt can be, a scope can be, and what might be useful. It's a shame. I've only scratched the surface but I've had a feeling for the potential that has led me here, you've marinated in it.

There are many things that have shaped this, I think that while the internet has allowed a lot of info to be spread widely, there has also been a trend towards homogeneous ideas about what a rifle does, what a scope does, and that anything from the past, is inferior.

I would also say that, had this rifle and scope turned out to be shit, I'd just say so. It's worth pointing out that even though it works for me, I enjoy it and can see a use, it might not be for everyone. But, how many people are even trying things they aren't sure about, without agonizing online for way to long, and perhaps even being dissuaded by people with only opinions, and no direct experience?

Right on the money.

Odd that the source for endless creation is the cause of so much conformity.

There are some nice rifles here. What is the opinion of the Ruger American Compact as an inexpensive alternative?

I'm a lefty. When I sling my rifle like I like to, the bolt handle of a right hand rifle digs in to my side.

Ruger just now are showing the compacts in left hand. It would be a dream come true.

I imagine that the compact is similar to my American, so I'd say sure.

I purchased 30 years ago a Remington 600 and then later that year a Remington 660 basically the same rifle 600 was the production model and 660 where (as I was told) parts put together rifles. Both have 16" barrels one in .308 and 6mm Rem. I have Leupold glass on both. They are light weight and small enough to use in the bush. My best shot out of the .308 was almost 250 yards. Wendy took her 6mm out Antelope hunting and was shooting Prairie dogs at 300+ yards. Great rifles lots of fun. Chris

It's zeroed at 100yds now, really I don't think it'll ever be shot over 200, and as far as holds or anything, I'll shoot it more and decide if more magnification is necessary or if the #1 is really all that. For the moment, I like it.

I wish that there were more compact low magnification scopes on the market. Something like the ACOG, Colt carry handle, Browe, would be nice to have in tube form. Would be a good pair for a carbine.

This scope is pretty compact, the 16" barrel also lends itself to walking about. You can drop the rifle to your side and not hit the ground.

I bet one of these combos in 7.62x39 would be sweet.

Was wondering about this rifle, Arc. Are you still enjoying it?

Did you ever try the German No. 4?

Did you ever find a sacrificial 8MM to cut down?

I'm still enjoying that rifle.

I do need to get a #4.

I have 2 sources for a modern 8mm, but have had other priorities.

They are out there, and I should probably pick one up, both options I found were not very expensive, but more than the Ruger American.

I'd recommend this rifle to anyone that hunts. It really makes 30.06 handy. The report and fireball are something.

My safe is also too full at this point, so that's a problem. A modern 8mm with a 16" barrel is still a goal though.

I cut a M70 pre war 3006 Std to 20" and added a Griffin and Howe mount. Great rifle

I love carbines, I have been keeping my eyes out for the CZ550 in 30.06.

Looks like a handy woods rifle Arc....as you probably know the #4 is pretty quick on target.

Nice package

Has anyone mentioned the Ruger American Ranch? I picked one up in 7.62x39 since I already have a Mini-30 and a stockpile of Mini-30 mags. Put a Leupold VX-R 2-7 with the Firedot reticle. Talk about a small, light, handy, CHEAP, durable rifle with a little bit of thump to it.

I don't remember, look back in the thread and see. It's possible, but this thread is geared more towards real calibers. Not sad "intermediate" rounds. Razz Big Grin

You know, rifles where your shoulder knows you shot something.

These Ruger American rifles are really great for the price. The trigger is great, after some Moly Slide it's butta.

How about a 16" .300 Win Mag? Or Weatherby Mag?
