Roll Eyes Alos, is that rifle still sans a rear aperture?

It is the equivelant of a 30a. It is a 3080. OTASCO(Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company) branded Marlin.

The rifle does not have a rear aperture. The rings are not quick release so I didn't see the need to spend the extra money. I have considered changing the Scout Mount to a Leverrail with the recessed ghost ring. But I have gotten myself into a tight spot and need to hold off on spending any more until my credit card balance is knocked down.

I like the setup. I took my recently returned 1895G to the range tonight. Its one heck of a blast to shoot. Just a bit more punch than the .30-30 that you have already seen.

I'm real tempted to just sell this rifle as a complete package and build up the 336W wiht a similar setup.

I have a 336 SS with a 16.25" bbl, and will eventually mount on it an XS scout rail. Having tried out an Aimpoint H-1 on a Steyr Scout for a few months, I know that its capable of adequate accuracy for a short barreled 30-30. Will go with a full-sized 2 MOA Aimpoint.

"Pretty much what I was thinking. Iron sights are not that great at 150 yards when aiming at a shoulder."

It is not an issue in this instance that you have a lever gun.
It is an issue that your gun is chambered in 22mag.Any 22mag be it bolt, lever, pump, semi etc near demand a decent scope. You can head shoot something as small as a squirrel or drop a cayote with it.

Scoping a lever rifle is like putting a motor on a canoe, just plain wrong. Even on a BLR (like my .243), a scope throws off, not only the balance, but also the aesthetics.

Asthetics yes. Balance no. I can still carry my Marlin at the receiver with perfect balance. I can shoulder the rifle with no noticable increase in the muzzle end weight.

Now I'm sure if you go and get scientific with it with some scales you might find some evidence to support the out of balance theory. But for real world applications I can honestly say I feel no noticable difference between my scoped Marlin and my unscoped Marlin .30-30.

A 16" barreled lever is in my opinion a little front-light. A scout scope of modest weight bring its balance back into place.

I think the speed allowed by quick action of a levergun would be greatly reduced if you had to find your target by looking thru a scope. If your shots a farther than 75 yards then use your scope. For shooting inside 75 yds I found that a scope spoils an otherwise quick handling carbine.

Years ago I was in a situation were I had an animal cornered within 10 yards but the bush was so thick I have no idea what animal it was. I suspect a black bear or a small moose. The rifle I had with me was a Ruger No.1 with 3-9x40 scope. It was useless for the situation I was in. After returning from that hunting trip I bought a stainless 336 in 30-30 and put a ghost ring rear sight on it.

Now I take two rifles hunting, that 30-30 and my scoped bolt action and I carry which ever rifle better suits each days hunting conditions.

^ It's for similar reasons that I'm putting an aimpoint on my 336.

I recently purchased a Takedown Browning BLR, and the forward-mount scope feature was a major motivator for the purchase. I am still saving my pennies to get a scout scope for it. I also recently purchased a 2.5x Leupold to mount on one of my rifles in a standard manner, and one of my regular BLRs will probably end up wearing that scope. While I prefer the look of a lever rifle without a scope, and the BLR iron sights are actually much kinder to my aging eyes than most gun sights, if I want to shoot well, my eyes are starting to need help.

This has been a very interesting topic, and I have learned lots about shooters views on leverguns.

Not sure if I would ever scope my 30-30 Model 94, but I am definitely going to replace the open sights with one of the peep sights by SkinnerSights. Much easier for my eyes to focus on that ring instead of the notch. I am also going to add either a Lyman gold bead or a Lyman white dot bead front to help.

DanB's scout setup on his Marlin is one nice setup.
