I put a 3x9 on my Henry .22, but I do not intend to scope my Marlin .357 Mag. At least not until I see how I do with it at 100 yds. The only reason I scoped the Henry is that I had the scope and it was railed for one.

I have scopes on 2 of my 4 Savage 99's and one on my Winchester 88.

I cannot even fathom one on my Win 94 or Marlin 336 or 39, although they do have ghost rings.

My eyes are gone I scope everything (rifle) .When I pull the trigger I want to hit what I'm aiming at. I can still shoot pretty good with a pistol.

Have a 3-9 scope on my Marlin 335 and it shoots dead on. I use it for bear and deer every year. It does the job without fail.

Nothing wrong with doing it. If you are going to hunt with it or do some long range target shooting then you may have to.

Now, that said, it is my preference to use iron sights on a lever gun. Something just feels weird to me about putting a modern scope on a lever gun. Again, that's just my preference.

I've got a bunch of lever action .22's, and was a traditionalist, thinking that scopes just looked "wrong" on this type of rifle. Well, I had occasion to pick up a 9422 in .22 magnum that had a 3x9 scope on it. While I still think it looks a little odd, boy is it easier to shoot than my semi-buckhorns on the others. So much for tradition.

Just an FYI, Dicks is running a sweet deal this week. $329 for a scoped Marlin 336. That so inexpensive, I'm going to get one just as a spare.

That would be an excellent choice IMO. I am thiking of something similar on a Savage 99, .308 I'm redoing. I have a Weaver V-3 on a Remington 600 and I like it. I just get a funny feeling when I see a 3X9 on a 30/30. 9x on a 30/30?

Its not a "sin" if the levergun is a BLR or maybe a later Savage 99 that is chambered for a longer range round like 300 Savage, 243 or 308, but on the more "brush gun" caliber leverguns and the classics like older Winny 94s and 95s....yeah...its a sin!

Absolutely, I'd like to get your impressions of the set-up. Overall I'm happy with this combo, although I may need to shift the scope forward a tad to accomodate the eye relief when using the higher power settings. I gave serious consideration to the FX-II scout set-up also, but went with the Leupold mostly due to availability and convenience. I'm still intrigued by the scout scope concept & would like to try it out sometime.

That is a smokin' deal! I just forwarded that to a few folks that have been on the fence on picking up a lever rifle...thanks for posting the heads-up on this sale! Cool

The scout setup takes a bit to get used to if you are going with a traditional crosshair scope. I'm used to the Eotech on my AR where I can just raise the weapon with no constant cheek weld and get off accurate shots.

The mental block of raising the rifle and looking through the lense of a very close is hard to get past. But take the rifle out to a range or land where you can do more of a real world application and you see the benefits. Usually you have one eye closed when looking through a scope. With the scout setup you can keep both eyes open and have a clear view through the scope. Allowing you to track your game easier. No more hunting for your game through the scope.

The Ghost ring sights offer the exact same benefits, just without the magnification.

I have considered getting a variable scope for the rifle I posted the pic on. However I just don't see the need. I didn't set that up to be a 200yd shooter. 100 or less for hog/deer. I have another 336 that can get the longer range treatment if I want it. But for now it remains stock.

OK, so I went and spent some time at dicks last night. They put mine together with WEAVER brand bases and rings. The wood on these was nothing special, the scope is a POS that I will be interested to see how fast we can make fail. I can't really see a need for anything above 4x on a 30wcf lever, even at 250 yrds, so the 3-9 has got to go. FYI Dick's has a 'walk-you-out-the-door' policy, and they forgot to take off a lock so I had to drive 30 mins back to their damn store. But overall, I still think its a steal on a marlin 336. I just might scout this one and leave the Win94's ironed, they are handier than the marlin anyway. My trapper needs a good trigger job, any suggestions?

Dan, that makes a pretty good point. If the user is not used to shooting both eyes open, the scout setup may suck.

At the same time my favorite local game are pronghorn and wapiti. Neither of which make a great match for the 30-30. I do chase the timber bucks from time to time, and very occasionally that can be through dense aspens, but the same rifle will need to be able to reach out to 300 in a pinch, hence the scope. (please no lectures, I've never needed to shoot my game more than once)

I put a scout scope from Leupold on my Marlin 1895 using a mount by AO who is someone else now.....I also have a fiber front sight with hood drilled out....plus a Williams Ghost Ring setup in rear.

Took no getting used to at all and with weaver style mounts and this setup it goes back to zero between attaching of scope. You need to shoot with both eyes open though to make it worth while....

I think Brickboy is right on target. My setup for deer in hardwood forests is a Browning BLR in .308 Win topped with a Leopold 1.4 - 4X compact.

It's an incredibly effective setup. Short, easy to put on target, and not so much magnification that targets let "lost". So I guess it boils down to the intended purpose of the lever gun.

1.5x5 VXIII on a 1895 mounted in QR Warnes is just the ticket. This one has the illuminated reticle and is very nice at dusk on a black bear. I really like the gun without optics but it is just to nice with this scope. Handiest rifle I own.
