So, although I thought I probably knew the answer to my own question, I don’t like to make assumptions and therefore asked. Smile

This might help. Article from 2004. It documents our ammo issues around the time of the Invasion of Iraq.

Sometimes being distinctive is more important than not being seen.

Sometimes, the older patterns work better than the new ones.

Look at the ARMY's UCP debacle and their adoption of the older Scorpion pattern. The older three color Desert was better for most of Iraq and the woodland pattern was much better for Afghanistan. (Should have purchased Multicam when it was initially).

From the “Ya think?” file:

“Abercrombie said he was also concerned that the military should not depend on foreign suppliers to address critical war needs.”

I can only wonder how many things that applies to besides small arms ammunition. When Clinton was President, I was told by a Foreign Service officer that he (his underlings, of course) were busily selling off our national stockpile items and which helped him claim, “See, I’m reducing the debt.”

Thanks for the article.

Check into missile and bomb inventories. IIRC they short loaded B-52s during gulf War I because we didn't have a large stockpile of dumb gravity bombs. Part of that was the decision to invest in smaller "smarter" but more expensive munitions instead of the cheaper dumb ones.

As for uniforms, the truth is, a general purpose solid color olive drab isn't a bad way to go. Israel takes this approach I believe.

It is amazing how poor many camos work out to be in the field.

The woodland for example shows up as more or less a solid color anyhow unless you are standing on top of the guy.

MARPAT {woodland} is excellent for many terrains but fails in some. Overall it looks like a winner tho. But olive drab for a big army scattered all over isn't as bad as one might think.

the GUN itself should NOT be black, tho. it's terrible. Some time for smiles and giggles look at pix of GW1 and you'll see wide open desert, with troops moving on the ground at long distance from the photographer and if they are in even the old chocolate chip camo are more orless invisible...except for that black line or dot of the weapn. Uncle should standardize a finish color of olive drab for weapons IMHO. Would work almost everywhere.

Agreed.
I think the push is towards flat, dark earth with the new weapons like the MK 17, and M110C rifle and M17 pistol. I'm not sure how we are going to do the other weapons.

Nagging question:

Why is it called "Flat Dark Earth" when it is actually "Flat Light Earth"?

Perhaps because it's darker when compared to the earlier military "Sand"/"Desert Tan" colors?

Or maybe when it was designed, there was an accompanying "Flat Light Earth" shade that was lighter, but it didn't catch on?

Best answers to the question yet.

But it's still light!

They told us they took black out of the ACU because it's easy to spot the black parts of the uniform. Then because of a shortage of foliage green they started issuing every possible accessory in black. Roll Eyes

I can’t speak from experience about the rest of the world, but around here MultiCam is an excellent pattern. No large expanses, e.g. trousers or shirt, of any solid color work as well, and as already mentioned in my experience with woodland it just looks like a dark blob at distance. That’s okay if the background is dark, but if not ….

Not that I’m any authority on camouflage in most parts of the world, but I’m always a little skeptical when some “special” group decides to go its own separate way from the rest of the military. I very often get the impression that the underlying justification is, “Because we can.” I’m reminded of the special Marines who decided they needed special 1911 pistols some years ago.

It always seemed to me that the true high speed, low-drag operators would be more qualified than anyone else to use whatever they had at hand. I remember way, way back that that was something Army Special Forces touted about themselves.

Multicam works well here, too. It's a pretty good general purpose camo. We are pretty green, too, being in the part of Idaho that's pretty!

Only criticism I have for it is the material the uniforms are made of or the dye. My SIL's gear he brought back from Afghanistan is all faded out and their isn't much actual distinction in the varying colors. So a lot of the stuff is sort of what you might call "dirty olive drab", which come to think of it, isn't too bad a color, either.

Woodland is not a very good pattern compared to Multicam or the even more superior desert MARPAT in an arid environment.

My guess is that because the ANA (Afghan Nat. Army) wears woodland, the Marines wanted to not stand out from them at a distance as being obvious Americans.

Otherwise, as mentioned above, desert MARPAT kicks ass in the desert, woodland MARPAT far outperforms old-school woodland in the forest.
