...this weekend at the club. It's a very nice rifle and it shot decently. It looked like a well-made AK-47 wthat shoots 5.56 and accepts AR-15 magazines. I was bored with it after shooting a few rounds.

I found it portly, very thick compared to my AR-15s and while I realise many people here swear by them, I give it a oh-hum rating.

Perhaps if it was less busy with all the rails and stuff it might have more appeal, but to me it just looked like a toy. A very expensive toy.

I am a man of simple tastes. To me a pure AR-15 has appeal, a Sig P22x has appeal. The Sig 556 just doesn't appeal to me.

Please save your invectives and acrimony for other threads, these were my impressions.

I wanted one but after holding one and realizing how damn heavy they are I decided that the 556 is not for me.

If I ever see one without a canted rail (seriously, I have not seen one yet) and I decicde I want it I am going to stick a Sully stock an standard 55x forearm on it for a compact, no-frills rifle. I think they look good with fixed stocks, personally.

I was of the same feeling until I picked up one with 551 handguards. World of difference in balance and heft. Try one with those handguards.

I second Morris and also feel the 556 with the 551 hand guards and folding CTR stock make it handle and look like a different weapon.

I read all these posts that start "has anyone else had a 556 fall apart while shooting" and all the other 556 issues I have been hearing, as well as the posts commending Sig's Customer Service, it makes me think that Sig needs to take it back to the drawing board, or pull the 556 and release the 550/551 re-worked for the AR mag. The 556 seems to have given the normally flawless name of SIG SAUER a black-eye.

I've never spent so little on one item (551 handguards) for a carbine and had it make such a big improvement.

There was a guy transferring one with the (greenish?) 551 handguards and CTR stock at my local shop recently. I wish I had picked it up to compare its weight to the standard handguard models. If nothing else, I think the 551 handguards are a lot more visually appealing.

IMO, the 551 handguards changed my SIG 556 from the fat girl at the dance to the lean, mean dancin machine, LOL. Seriously, the gun feels immensely better in your hands with the 551 handguards. YMMV

It's funny you should say this, but all the 556's I've seen appear to have a rail that is off.

Though, I think it is just my eyes and the way the rail attaches to the upper. It always looks canted compared to an M4 flattop, LMT MRP rail or XCR.

To each their own ... I liked my first one well enough to buy a second. configured one with a folder and the other other with a straight stock.

I've noticed they aren't exactly target rifles ... but I have AR's for that Smile

I have one of the earlier ones, and so far it's been very nice. I've looked at numerous other ones with the intent to purchase a second one. However, I've been pretty disappointed with the overall fit & finish of the newer rifles I looked at. Add to that all the reported issues people have experienced with the newer ones, I decided that I'll just stick with 1 556 unless and until SIG improves their production/quality. If I was gonna get another one, it would be one of the older ORCs with the 4 bolt rails and Swiss BCG. The only thing that is likely to change my opinion is if GGI starts doing custom work on 556s. Then, I'd probably still stick with one of the older 556s.

As far as accuracy goes... There's really no excuse for these things to not be somewhere around 1 MOA... After all, the Swiss guns are. The fact that many 556s can't meet that standard is just further proof they come up short quality wise when compared to their Swiss counterparts.

I had mine for all of a week and sold it. The ergos are weird, and they're really front heavy. I'll stick with my AR.

I have a New Jersey version of the 556 Holo, solid stock and no flash suppressor. Not bad looking once you get used to it. It’s been a good rifle, accurate and comfortable to handle. Easy to break down and clean. No complaints with the fit and finish.

For a military style 5.56 rifle, give me an AR any day.
