Last weekend I was standing in line at a LGS waiting to for my turn to be helped. There was a group of local GIs buying, selling, and trading various guns in the store. The young GI ahead of me was in the middle of a transaction and apparently had just traded a rifle for a handgun. My attention was first captured by the handgun, a Skorpion in .32 ACP, along with a couple mags and a surplus holster for it all packaged nicely in a plastic case, along with several boxes of ammo. I next noticed the rifle and immediately ID'd it as a bullpup...but what had me perplexed was, staring at the muzzle and bayo lug, I was certain it was an SKS. Curiosity got the better of me and so I asked and it was explained to me that it was indeed a Yugo SKS barreled action mounted inside an SG bullpup chassis. Intrigued, I asked the GI about it and he said that he enjoyed shooting it but his wife was pregnant and he wanted a gun that she could shoot and he thought he could most easily part with the SKS bullpup...although I got the impression he was just a little bored with the rifle and wanted something new to shoot. When I asked he said that it cycled fine...but whether that is true or, perhaps, he said it for the benefit of the clerk handling the trade, I don't know. The guy behind the counter seemed impressed with the quality of the SG chassis.

I'm sure some in the know are probably aware of this mod but it was news to me. I enjoy the SKS for what it is, a relatively inexpensive, relatively well designed, and reliable rifle...but it is also a tad heavy and unwieldy...the idea of a bullpup variant intrigues me.

Anyone have any experience with a bullpup SKS, or with one in the SG bullpup chassis?

In addition to its own store website the gun store advertises its inventory on a couple different websites and so I borrowed a couple pics of the rifle they are selling.

Really popular before cheap ass AR-15s became available.

Rapidly replaced by the $25 ACOG knockoff optics.

ASG, thanks for the laugh! Ok, so apparently SKS bullpups have been around for awhile and I'm just now learning about them...pretty soon you guys will be telling me that TV dinners and newfangled flip phones are a thing. Big Grin

I've got one on a Norinco paratrooper rifle. Fun gun to shoot with the Tapco 20 rounders. Feels just as akward and looks just as goofy as other bullpups like the Tavor to me.

Good to know...apparently the GI that was trading it didn't know that because he wasn't sporting either...and he seemed to make the error of actually liking the rifle. Wink

Anyone with an ounce of objectivity should quickly realize that with any decision, any design, there are Pro's and Con's, positives and negatives...or simply, tradeoffs

If you are a collector or a 'purist' or don't feel that the benefits of a bullpup outweigh the downsides for your individual uses then obviously you won't like or buy one...but, the fact that you can modernize an older design like the SKS, attach various accessories to it, and, most importantly (at least to me) shorten the OAL by 10" +/- , well I find that both interesting and impressive.

Some of the claims made my those who have actually used the SG chassis w/ an SKS are that it has helped to accurize the rifle, it has shortened the OAL, and has maintained the reliability that the SKS has a reputation for, as well as improved the handling...those seem like features at least worth considering.

I'm ok with disagreement and by all means, if an SKS bullpup is a bad idea I'd like to hear arguments as to why, but I'd also like to hear the impressions of those who have actually shot an SKS bullpup, and especially from those who have used the SG/ SKS chassis.

I'm not a bullpup fan ( for other reasons) but you don't buy an SKS because it's sexy...
If I were looking at that , I'd be more interested in accuracy and reliability.
If it met those requirements were met, I'd buy one. Pretty is as pretty does... Wink
