I have an M1A Scout Squad. The rifle seems to be pleasantly and consistently accurate. The problem is me. However, in this case, I am not helped by a fairly heavy trigger with some grit and creep.

What can be done with an M1A trigger group to improve it? Options would be:

1. What can I do on my own?
2. Is there a decent after market trigger available? I've done the google thing and understand that there are a number of them available.
3. Should I drop out the trigger group and send it to a smith, and if so, which one?

Thanks. Obligatory pic. BTW, I really like the Vortex 2-7 Scout Scope. Very clear and comfortable.

ETA: "Chuck it and buy an AR10 platform" isn't an option. I like this rifle and spent my gun money.

The shooting sight trigger is well worth the money. You can adjust it to your liking. I can dial mine down to under 4 pounds. I can help you purchase one. I'd only purchase the speed hammer if you're looking to compete in service rifle competitions where hammer swing speed can make the difference between scoring an X or a 10 in the offhand (standing) position. It's not very beneficial to the casual shooter.

A good trigger job by Jon Wolfe, Ted Brown or any other M14 specialist will yield good results.

In order for a proper traditional trigger job to be done on a trigger group, the entire rifle should be sent to a gunsmith so he can test it in your rifle. The tension on the trigger group can affect the trigger pull on a traditional trigger job.

Thank you, Tony. I will look into that trigger and let you know. I do not compete; I'm looking to make this rifle more enjoyable to shoot well.

I will never be a particularly long range shooter, nor do I expect to ever get really good at it. I'd like to improve, and I do shoot a good hunting rifle trigger much better than I do this one. I also have enough rifle trigger pulls to be able to feel what is going on with this one.

I appreciate the suggestions.

You can send the trigger group to a number of great smiths.

Charlie Maloney or Bruce Dow would top my list. If you want a blast from the past, I think Elmer Ballance will still do trigger jobs, if he's not dead.

I haven't talked to him in years, but he did a few triggers for me and was still selling parts.

Charlie Maloney is a trip to talk to. Frankly, I'd say get in touch with an old timer, just for the conversation.

The first and last time I went there, it was with Horse. I doubt he remembers me, but I bet he remembers Jim.

ArtieS, I am off tomorrow nad was planning to go to the Eustis Gun Club (EGC) tomorrow. I could meet you at Bruce's shop if you'd like. I LOVE going there. It's a REAL gun shop. Plus, it brings back fond memories of visiting there with Jim (Horse). If so I'll meet you there and then head to EGC. If not maybe some other time.

Look for contact information for BILL SPRINGFIELD. He took a 22 lbs HK trigger and brought it down to around 5lbs for me. He does exceptional work.
