Last round bolt hold open? Login/Join

Is it a deal killer for you if a rifle doesn’t has last round bolt hold open?

I was all set to buy a Galil Ace in .308 and then I realized that it doesn’t hold the bolt open after the last round is fired.

It completely spoiled me on the gun.

I really like feeling when the mag is empty and think I’ll really miss that.

Is LRBHO a deal breaker or not for you? I want to like this gun and buy it, but I’m leaning towards passing on it and forever giving up on a .308 battle rifles.

I was excited as this is a military gun with a lot of them in use (read, will be around and supported for a while...a Ruger 7.62...who knows where it will be in a few years?

Who releases a new gun without LRBHO? Sheesh, IWI.

Lack of a bolt hold open isn't a deal breaker for me, as I'm used to HK91s. What bothers me about the Galil 308 is that it could have a bolt hold open because it uses .308 AR magazines and like the .556 version it should have one IMO. Whereas the 7.62x39 version with AK mags naturally wouldn't have one, it doesn't bother me. If that makes sense. I think the Galil ACEs are nice rifles otherwise.

I used to think it didn’t bother me. But I have found out recently that it does. Shooting PCC steel competition it does take more time to “click” then reload and work the slide on an AR pattern gun.
I think my next PCC will have LRBHO and be a side charger (left hand side)

I think I'd be paraphrasing the late Peter Capstick to say that nothing is as loud as the click on an empty chamber.

Deal breaker for me on anything I bet stuff on.

If you bet on that you need to reconsider for serious work. Doesn't bother me in the least. Its my job to manage the ammo not the gun's.

Generally not a deal breaker, but something I'd prefer. On a newly designed rifle that costs as much as an ACE? Yeah, I'd kinda expect the bolt to lock back on an empty mag.

Consider the deal broke.

Its 1:12 twist rate is marginal for heavier bullets.

It uses SR25 or Pmags but doesn't have last round bolt back.

$2,000 for all this? Not me.

AKs, 10/22, 9mm AR PCC are all without it. If I gave up on anything that didn't hold the bolt open on empty mags, I'd have to sell half my long guns.
I just deal with it, but mine are all range use. Maybe you should investigate M1A. Battle rifle with LRBHO, 20 round mags and heavy enough to beat a f$#&*r to death if you run it dry. My $.02

A Perpetual Disappointment...

I'm not interested in another 308 so I'm not interested in an ACE, but not having LRBHO wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me ... however for a new production weapon combined with its price point I'd expect it. If anything were to be a deal breaker it would be the barrel twist. I think about the heaviest bullet you could get away with is a 165-168 ... 1-10 twist is popular for a reason!

HK MP5 doesn’t hold the bolt open either and it’s one of the most ubiquitous guns in history.

I believe the Navy model has LRBHO
and again I believe it's the last generation design.

If I'm wrong, maybe someone (JoshNC) will come along and correct me!

Depends on the application. As a range toy, I can live with it. Serious work or competition gun? That would be a deal breaker.

The Galil ACE is an AK, so I didn’t expect it to come with a BHO. Doesn’t bother me.

While I like it it's not a deal breaker for me. It's all about what you could be comfortable with. I'm not a professional and don't have plans to be one. I practice most with what I envision picking up first in an emergency. I have fun with the rest.

If your plans are to pick up the ACE as your primary go to rifle I don't think it would be as difficult for you to get used to as you may think. A bit of steady reloading drills over time will certainly diminish unease and bring reloads down to a very acceptable time. In real world oh shit situations I would imagine that bolt hold open or not you'll be reloading from behind cover as soon as it is feasible, hopefully not when you're empty. If it locks back or goes click you should be getting behind cover or transitioning. Seems to me last choice would be a mag change while standing out in the open.

Yes, that would probably kill the deal for me.

I always liked the "hollow pop" a AR has when it runs dry. Don't need windowed mags, etc., when it runs dry, if you fire them enough. No looking at the side of the mag or round counts, just fire bye experience

I can make do but I strongly prefer a BHO. If all else was equal I'd not pick something without one.

No bolt hold open has seemed to work OK for the hordes of poorly trained soldiers, thugs, terrorists, rebels, freedom fighters, etc. who have been using AKs for the past 60 years or so. They have done some pretty "serious work" with them.

Yeah ... but we're a spoiled lot ... we need 3-4 pound triggers and guns that don't weigh over 7 pounds and are nearly recoilless - otherwise they aren't shootable!
