Hey guys, been reading the SIG Sauer 551 threads and have debated on getting one of these. Always loved the 55x. Got the closest thing I could find/afford that was 'similar' years back. The Beretta AR-70 (my pseudo-sig530) -yeah I know it's not roller-locked I have an affinity for the Beretta. Action is smooth as butter, trigger is great and the mags are like weapons. Pretty accurate as well. (Can hit 2 foot steel targets consistently at 300 meters with irons.) Even figured out how to mount 550 handguards on it. And it has an 'old school' rail that to my surprise mounted a CQ/T quite easily. (had no idea it would mount on an AR70 til a Lieutenant at work gave me a great deal on one) So...
My question is how does my ol' AR70 compare to these 'new" 551's? Fit, function, accuracy? I'd consider selling my AR70 to get one of these if they are comparable.. Pic of the 70.
If I were you, I'd keep the Beretta. It's an old school European classic. If you are considering the US equivalent the SG551 or 556, I'd certainly hold on to what you already have. I don't know what twist rate you get with the Beretta, but I'd guess it's 1/12. The newer SIGs are 1/7. Functionally, They're very similar, as a matter of fact I think SIG and Beretta worked together on their rifles.
Your AR70 will have more collector appeal IMO, and better quality control than the 556 based rifles. If you were considering a real Swiss 551, then that may be a different story.
I also agree. Keep the Ar70. It is a very unique and desirable firearms to own. I think the question to ask your self is why do you want a 55x series rifle? Is is the look, design, uniqueness, or quality? For less then a West Coast armory 551 you can purchase some very interesting rifles that share the same quality manufacturing as the 551. I would look into purchasing an original AUG, HK, or FAL for the kind of loot. I am sure the re-sell on the those will be allot better then an Pseudo SIG. Looking into purchasing one of the above rifles can also add another dimension to your already impressive European assault rifle collection.
