In this situation.

Just iron sites. Being that I would be in bed and upstairs one would have to come up to me.
I would get out of bed and go to the far end of the hallway opposite the stairs and lay in wait in the prone position as I would be in total darkness (presuming they did not turn on the lights) the bad guy would be backlit as my stairwell is back lit by my front door entry light that is always on in the dark.

I would lay in wait identify the target upon reaching the top of the stairs and engage.

After calling 911 and safely barricading myself and family in a safe spot I would cut nothing on until I heard them at the door. At which time if I was sure it was an intruder, I would use the muzzle flash to first get their attn and hopefully sending them to the happy hunting ground and then I would use the light.

At 21 ft or less I doubt you would have time to use the redot or need. The light is a useful tool, but it can give you away.

Honestly you would use what is not listed the most. In the dark your ears will work abnormally well. Your brain will shift focus to the sense that can help you the most.
If you can not see well your hearing and your sense of smell will be ultra sensitive.
So...
I would say out of your choices I would choose red dot (and my ears). At the time I know the person is close the light would be used.

Like hell, with my four big dogs I wouldn't be able to hear shit. On the other hand they will probably give me a clue as to the BG's location.
I wil arrive behind them with my AK with a red dot and flashlight attached. The red dot will be on and my thumb will be on the pressure switch for the light.

I have a nice little strobe flashlight @180lm, but really I need both hands for the shotgun. The only other authorized person in the house should be in bed next to me, and probably woke me up to go look at the sound. That makes the house a free fire zone.

Im just goin to use a flashlight. With a laser or red dot you wont beable to see if there really is a threat. I like to know what im shooting at.

And what happens when that light switch is on the other side of the room where the threat is? Shoot at shadows, killing a possible loved one?

Congratulations you've just been shot, it really was a bad person. Hope you have a trauma kit.

You could've avoided this if you have a light on your carbine. We'll be sure to put that on your tombstone.

You're going to shoot someone with an AR indoors?

I hope you like it loud, and I hope your neighbors don't mind bullets traveling into their homes.

Silencers can take care of the loudness, but you are right they are quite loud.

But you are off the mark on the wall penetration. With exception of Bird Shot, or frangible ammunition, 223 ammo tends to penetrate less through the average home construction then even handgun calibers.

Because of it's design it tends to fragment after it penetrates the first wall board. Particularly with defensive ammo like the Hornandy 75gr bullet.

And if you want sources, NOTA published an article about it around the year 2000. Comparing common LE ammo, including 223, 9mm fired from a MP5, buckshot, and 40S&W.
