And he's answering your questions.

Perhaps you're reading too much into his replies.

A simple search around the net will readily yield the info you're seeking, ( such as recommendations to avoid aftermarket Mini magazines and stick with Ruger factory mags. )

This information provided here thus far from him and the other members is beneficial.

What exactly have I posted in this thread that hurts your feelings? You have asked questions and I've answered them from my own experience and where necessary have spent some time searching for answers to your questions as well.

I have utterly no idea what I have posted that could in any way have possibly bothered you in even the smallest of ways.

Every Triple K mag I ever tried in my 181 refused to function. Never had the first issue with factory 20 round mags.

And yes, Triple K mags stink.

Thank you. I am just going to spend my money on factory mags!

Went and traded off a M&P 45 Compact for it. Came with a 30 round factory mag. While I was filling out the paper work another customer who was doing a trade said he had a 20 round factory mag in his truck I could have!

I was not to keen on the Houge stock and might change it out with a wood one. Will wait and see what I can find. The gun is in pretty good shape. Been fired a lot, but well taken care of.

Nice rifle! Glad you were able to work it out. For what it's worth, I like the Hogue.

I went out to shoot it real quick and after I did I liked the Hogue stock a little more. The place I shoot was a wet muddy muck hole. I will get it out as soon as I can to do a longer serious range session and see if it will grow on me.

4859, no worries!!

There is nothing wrong with the Hogue stock and I believe they get very good reviews practically-speaking. The only downside is to the seller in that it isn't "factory" so it might have been a reason the gun sat there for so long which is actually an advantage for you. Sounds like you want a shooter and you got a good one.

RE: Mags, here's what I have found. If anyone has other experience, hop in. The 5 and 20 round factory Ruger mags are said to be 100%. The Ruger factory 10, 15 and 30's get more variable reviews and I THINK the series of rifle has something to do with it. Reason i bring it up is that if you want a bunch of mags, you might test some before you buy a bunch.

The Triple K's get bad reviews and the Pro-Mags look nasty and get scratched up in seating and are hard to release in the guns I've tested them in, but of the 4 or five I've tried they all worked.

For my money I'd stick to buying factory magazines. But in a pinch, if you got a screaming deal on a Pro-Mag you might try one in your gun and see if it works. For some reason, Ruger Mini's seem to vary in which and what mags work well in them. I don't know why this would be, but I'm just reporting what I have seen in reviews. In the guns I've shot Ruger and Pro-Mag worked and the Triple K's simply didn't.

Enjoy your rifle. Nothing IMO handles like a Mini-14. Best natural ergos on a rifle.

Oh, shell deflectors...

They are out there for sale and are handy in that mini's tend to try to keep up with HK91's for extreme range empty-launching. I made a deflector out of heavy wire hose-clamped to a Pro-Mag but I'm still refining the design. It's not quite ready for series production... Big Grin

3/4Flap,
I'd love to see a pic of your wire/hose clamp deflector if you care to share it. If you feel it's not ready for prime time distribution, please just send to the email in my profile. And if you care not to put it out there, that's fine too. I just picked up a ranch rifle version and have not yet shot it. Allegedly, the ejection is flatter, but I'm suspecting the distance is still considerable.

Here it is.

Works, but the cases come out with such velocity they deflect fairly far the other direction!

I'm going to remove the duct-tape and replace it with a bag affair.

Thanks.

So does it bounce them back generally over the top of the ejection port? Mine's scoped so I can only imagine the geometries that the cases may take. I like the bag idea, or a fine mesh net.

The only aftermarket mags that I have heard that worked OK were the Tapco gen 2 with the metal reinforcement on the front of the mag.

Tapco Gen II review.

Yeah, over to the left. I'm going to go to the bag tho as they still land too far away. Cases come out pretty fast from a Mini. It is plumb amazing how much a slight bend in the deflector causes a substantial change in where the case lands.

And while it looks like it must feel weird on the gun, it doesn't really change the handling at all.

I make deflectors for my AR's out of leather and/or inner tube and they are excellent, placing the shell right at my feet. I made one that used a bag but I found I didn't really need it. I shoot very little factory ammo and handload almost all my .223. I don't want to lose cases. Also, I shoot a lot of varmints and would wind up losing a lot of cases if I didn't use a deflector or catcher.

Thanks for that.

I might have to call Tapco...

The vid you posted is 2011.

I just googled the things a bit and it appears the "Gen 2" has maybe been updated {c. 2013?} even again to take care of fit problems??

So it looks like Tapco might have a good mag that is even better {?} than the Gen 2's, except that they only list a Gen 2 on their site. One source said they didn't change the nomenclature but actually had 2 in stock, the Gen 2's for sale and then the Gen 3's {slightly different} given in replacement for malfunctioning Gen 2's. With all that being 5 years old or so I wonder if what is called the Gen 2 now is actually the updated Gen 2, what one guys called a "Gen 2 1/2". LOL.

I need to call Tapco...

I know he will want to move it.

Just got off the phone with "Drew" at Tapco.

Here is what he told me:

1} There has never been an update/improvement to the Gen2 Tapco mags. Reason folks think so is that they will NOT work in 180 and 181 series guns, so confusion spread on the internet about what works and what doesn't.
2} As stated, the Gen2 mags will not work in 180 and 181 series rifles. However.....folks MAY be able to make mods to the mag well on the guns and variations in production of Mini's means that some guys MIGHT have guns of those series' that will take and function w/ Gen2 mags. He said it is best to stick to factory mags in those guns.
3} POST-181 series guns work fine with the Gen2 magazines.

So.....

Headsup 4859; You probably want to steer clear of the Tapco mags in your 181 series rifle.

For others, it does appear that there is a good option for later versions of the rifle.

I see some bad reviews on Midway but they don't cite the series number of the rifle used, so...

magazines...

Mine came with but a single 5-rounder.
I'll probably just slowly just accumulate a few Ruger ones for 30 bucks a pop. By most accounts, they're the only ones that consistently work.

I could probably save a few bucks on a Tapco that 'may or may not work'. It's getting harder to decipher genuine experience vs. sour grapes in product reviews now days.
