With the recent thread about the LRB M-25 ( http://sigforum.com/eve/forums...=807103991#807103991 ), I was wondering if you thought this was a better way to go for mounting a scope on a M14?

It looks like the scope may set a bit too far forward. May work for a red dot.

Red dot yes, long distance scope, no.

It would work for a scout scope but not a standard eye relief scope.

As folks have states, those rails are good for red dots, or "Intermediate Eye Relief" scopes, called scout scopes.
They place the scope too far way for conventional eye relief. I haven't seen anyone make one for medium or heavy barrels, and probably won't. You'd be hogging out the stock probably. LRBs M25 receiver _is_ the best way to mount a scope to an M14. After that, look at Sadlak or Smith Enterprises scope mount offerings. I have often wondered if the barrel mounted scout mounts effected the accuracy of the gun much? Does anyone have any before and after experience? (not planning on using one, just curious)

My only experience with "Scout Mounts" is on short rifles-"Carbines" As far as my Socom 16 it is more accurate, in my hands and off a bench, with the scope than with irons. (groups are tighter) but that is generally the case with any decent scope vs irons. About the only way I could measure for sure would be to buy an expensive "conventional" mount and use the same power setting as the IER in the"Scout Mount" Too much trouble for incrimental differences given the purpose of a "Scout" in the first place. I checked out the LRB M25 receivers, and they look nice, except that you have to remove the scope to use the iron sights. The Sadlak mounts don't have to be removed for that. I'm just researching for a future build.

Does anyone make a quick release mount that would work on the M-25? __________________________ |

M25 is standard M1913. So get like an ARMS #22 rings, that should be fine.
Line of sight of optical scope is lower on M25...that's a nice thing about it. With Sadlak or Smith, you need add a cheek weld just to get somewhat proper height from the stock. |

I don't know why anyone thinks they need to see both the irons and the scope on an M14. Anyone gets close enough for irons, and you aren't doing your job.
As Too says, the advantage of the LRB M25 receiver is that the scope is lower. Scoping an M14 conventionally is quite high off the receiver. Previously the lowest you could get was the ARMS #18, and they have issues with brass, and beating on the scope (cosmetically). My advice to those wishing to scope an M14, is chose the right scope for your rifle. Don't put a variable 25 power scope on an "loaded" model. Choose a less powerful, smaller, more versatile scope, and save yourself some height off the receiver heel. Honestly a great scope for the M14 is Leupolds 3.5-10 x40mm. You don't really need the irons, because you can just pull the power down. And if you do feel you need irons, it is out of the way without huge rings.
